Cheltenham Festival Analysis – The Class Of 2020

Normally a Summer-project, the suspension of racing due to the pandemic has given me the opportunity to do my Cheltenham Festival-racereads earlier than usual; so here they are – my in-running pen pictures and ratings for all 477 horses who ran at the 2020 Festival.

Navigate between races and days
There’s a recurring block of links between races that will take you to a race you want to look at.

Each individual pen picture is structured like this:

Finishing position – Horse name in bold
Description of how it ran
Rating

Notes
– Race distances are rounded up to the nearest furlong
– A rating of ‘0’ indicates a horse which didn’t complete or finished too far behind the winner to register even a rating of 1
– A rating between [ ] indicates a horse which didn’t complete, but got far enough into the race to take an educated guess as to where it would have finished (usually but not exclusively, these are of course last-fence or hurdle fallers or unseaters)

Day One, Tuesday March 10th

SKY BET SUPREME NOVICES´ HURDLE (GRADE 1)
2m

1 Shishkin
midfield, mistake 3rd, pushed along away from it, towards rear of main group and niggled along starting down the hill and pulled wide going to 3 out, headway and prominent when hampered 2 out, pushed along away from it, stayed on home turn with 4 lengths to find, closed on leaders approaching last, switched outer to middle, chased Abacadabras last, drew upsides jumping, 1st 2 pulled clear, put under pressure, stayed on strongly last 150 yards, led close home. As connections said, everything that could go wrong did go wrong, but they did themselves no favours in the first place by running over 2m – even 3m might suit.
143

2 Abacadabras
held up, started a move and closing in midfield on the bit at the top of the hill after 5th,  further headway going comfortably from 3 out, drawing upsides when slightly hampered 2 out, led on the bit approaching last, wandered a little nearing it, hard ridden on landing, stayed on well under pressure, 1st 2 pulled clear, headed 100 yards out, no extra final strides.
143

3 Chantry House
prominent to midfield, more prominent when niggled along approaching 4th, mistake 5th and hard ridden away from it, closed up going better from the top of the hill and tracked leaders approaching 3 out, ridden into it, niggled along approaching 2 out, hard ridden away from it, outpaced home turn, put under pressure approaching last, was bumped jumping, kept on up the hill to take 3rd, no impression on 1st 2.
132

4 Asterion Forlonge
led, niggled along approaching 3rd, pushed along when jumped right 3 out, stayed on in narrow lead, jumped right 2 out bumping Elixir D’Ainay who fell, pushed along home turn, headed under a ride approaching last, well held jumping, ridden out, kept on, no more up the hill. Not only shaped like he was going faster than ideal throughout the race and would have been better off in the Ballymore, but the way he jumped suggests he’d be better right-handed.
129

5 Allart
midfield, lost places and midfield to rear/niggled along approaching 5th, rear of main group and a bit to do approaching 3 out, closer order after, ridden along and stayed on approaching 2 out, sustained effort after it, tracked 1st 2 home turn under a ride, put under pressure approaching last, no extra nearing it and jumped in 5 lengths 5th, driven and no more up the hill, kept on.
128

6 Edwardstone
held up last, made a couple of places after 5th but nudged along in rear of the main group at the top of the hill, detached from main group and a lot to do approaching 3 out, niggled along after it, closed slightly approaching 2 out, pushed along and picked a couple off approaching home turn, put under pressure approaching last, faded nearing it, weakened up the hill.
120

7 Heaven Help Us
midfield, hampered after 3rd and shuffled back a few lengths, niggled along from the top of the hill and headway wide into prominent position approaching 3 out where hampered, pushed along widest of all approaching 2 out, steadied into it and hampered again, lost place and detached/well held home turn, lost further ground before and after mistake last, no more.
105

8 Whatsnotoknow
prominent, raced wide, tracked leaders at the top of the hill, niggled along when squeezed out approaching 3 out, pushed along and lost place approaching 2 out, put under pressure and weakened/carried head awkwardly home turn, hung left approaching last when well held, weakened further after mistake last, tailed off.
105

9 Soviet Pimpernel
chased leader, mistake 4th and shuffled back a place, ridden along 3 out and lost place, looked held approaching 2 out, well held home turn, no more, tailed off.
94

10 Hollow Sound
held up, mistake 4th and pushed along away from it, lost place and struggling/detached from main group at the top of the hill after 5th,  tailed off 2 out, rider persevered but weakening further when mistake last, trailed in.
85

11 Fiddlerontheroof
tracked leaders, niggled along approaching 5th, pushed along and lost place approaching 3 out, kept on under a ride approaching 2 out, mistake, weakened approaching home turn, looked heavy-legged approaching last, eased right down, finished tired.
82

12 Berkshire Royal
held up towards rear, lost place after 5th, detached last and struggling at the top of the hill, hopelessly tailed off jumping 2 out, trailed in.
63

B Captain Guinness
midfield, niggled along from 3 out, good ground wide and prominent approaching 2 out, moving comfortably when brought down there. Was beginning to look like playing a hand in the finish and, like Elixir D’Ainay, is a hard-luck story.
0

F Elixir D’ainay
tracked leaders, a little ground and chased leader approaching 5th, upsides from 3 out, moved comfortably enough when took off too early, was bumped by Asterion Forlonge and fell 2 out. For all he was hampered, he did make an error of his own in taking off too early at the second last – all the same, quite possibly a hard-luck story.
0

P Mario De Pail
held up, mistake 2nd, niggled along after 3rd, more firmly ridden along 5th, lost place/struggling and detached at the top of the hill, tailed off 3 out, eased down and pulled up before 2 out.

RACING POST ARKLE CHALLENGE TROPHY NOVICES´ CHASE (GRADE 1)
2m

1 Put The Kettle On
led 2nd, headed approaching 5th, ridden into 6th, led 9th, travelled comfortably home turn, ridden approaching 2 out and the better jump, left 3 or 4 lengths clear, put under pressure, stayed on well between last 2, was closed on after last, pulled out more under pressure last 175 yards to draw clear, genuine effort.
139

2 Fakir D’oudairies
chased leader to after 2nd, remained prominent, niggled along approaching 10th, pushed along from 3 out, effort and moved upsides Put The Kettle On home turn, ridden when mistake 2 out, hard ridden, some 3 lengths behind last, hard driven, stayed on up the hill, closed on winner, almost drew upsides then winner found more, no extra last 100 yards. The mistake at the second last probably wouldn’t have cost him the win as Put The Kettle On seems the type to pull out more when needed.
145

3 Rouge Vif
midfield, niggled along 10th, ridden and some 5 or 6 lengths to find after 3 out, stayed on approaching home turn, no extra when left 5th 2 out, put under pressure, kept on, went 4th approaching last, stuck to task, closed on 3rd up the hill and took the place post, no chance with 1st 2.
127

4 Global Citizen
held up rear, lost place and became detached last 6th, niggled along 8th, hampered 10th, ridden, very good ground under a push and prominent racing wide approaching 3 out, outpaced under a ride after, rallied and passed a couple to go 3rd some 5 lengths down home turn, hard ridden after 2 out, no impression on 1st 2, still 3rd jumping last, driven, no more, faded, tired last 100 yards and lost 3rd post.
126

5 Al Dancer
midfield, niggled along 7th and again after 9th, hampered 10th, in touch in rear of main group 3 out, hard ridden after it, put under pressure approaching home turn, weakened, well held when slightly hampered 2 out, kept on and passed beaten ones after last, made no contribution.
124

6 Notebook
prominent,  niggled along approaching 10th, hard ridden after 3 out, outpaced home turn, well held 2 out, weakened before and after last, lost 5th up the hill.
119

F Esprit Du Large
held up, headway and midfield 8th, niggled along after 10th, sustained effort and with leaders 3 out, hard ridden and weakened home turn, dropping away when fell 2 out. Having reached the end of his tether, he’d have finished tailed off had he completed.
0

F Maire Banrigh
midfield, headway and prominent 3rd, tracked leaders 9th, fell 10th. Was going well enough at the time.
0

F Cash Back
led to 2nd, chased leader after, steadied into and hit 4th, led approaching 5th, steadied into and hit 9th, headed, chased leader till pushed along and lost place approaching 2 out, eased off, tailing off when went right and fell 2 out.
0

P Our Merlin
midfield, lost place 9th, in rear when hampered 10th, became detached, weakened, tailed off when pulled up before 3 out.
0

U Brewin’upastorm
held up rear, ridden into and blundered badly 10th, unseating rider. Hadn’t yet been put into the race.

ULTIMA HANDICAP CHASE (GRADE 3)
3m1f

1 The Conditional
prominent to midfield, in close to 1st, mistake 4th, closer order and prominent 16th, travelled comfortably 3 out, at most nudged along approaching home turn, pushed along turning in, mistake 2 out and pecked on landing, hard ridden, a length down last, soon drew upsides under a ride, wandered but stayed on well under pressure till was closed on last 75 yards, held on well. The mistake at the second last probably did him a favour as he’s the type that needs to be produced late, and he’d have come off second best if there’d been another 100 yards.
142

2 Kildisart
stoked along to make a start, prominent, niggled along and reminder after 11th, not fluent 15th, moved within a length of the leader going to 3 out, hit it, pushed along and reminder approaching home turn, every chance 2 out, stayed on, a length down last, put under pressure, stayed on, a length to find 175 yards out, stayed on well under pressure, closed on The Conditional final 100 yards but didn’t quite get there. Good run, but had headgear on and made it clear that he comes with risks going forward, getting a reminder with a circuit to travel – his temperament might come under suspicion.
153

3 Discorama
held up rear, raced keenly approaching 4th, mistake 6th, headway and midfield 15th, niggled along, around 5 lengths to find 3 out, ridden along, kept on approaching home turn, hung left, came wide going to 2 out, outpaced, looked well held under pressure between last 2, hung left again, stayed on 175 yards out, closed on leaders, sustained effort to get 3rd close home, no impression on 1st 2. The Nationals are the way forward here, this trip proving too short.
148

4 Vinndication
tracked leaders, in close to 2nd and 5th, not fluent 10th, hit 11th, chased leader and niggled along after 17th, pecked on landing 3 out, pushed along approaching home turn, hard ridden approaching 2 out, upsides and pecked on landing, ridden and led approaching last, steadied into it, hard ridden, soon headed, put under strong pressure, faded 150 yards out, stuck to task but lost 3rd close home. There were suggestions pre-race that he doesn’t want to go right-handed, but leading at the last is good enough for me on that score; having said that there were too many little errors, so that needs to improve – he’s young enough though.
159

5 Big River
midfield, lost place first circuit and in last trio after 11th, towards rear of main group when ridden along after 17th, outpaced when went right 3 out, put under pressure, stayed on approaching home turn, closing a little 2 out, continued to close approaching last and jumped it 4 lengths down, sustained effort up the hill, no extra close home and nearest finish. Ran as expected; he’s run like a strong stayer before and needs extreme trips.
141

6 Cobra De Mai
midfield to rear, more towards rear after 11th, mistake 13th, headway and midfield 17th, niggled along at the top of the hill, ridden into 3 out with quite a bit to do, hard ridden approaching home turn, passed a few but struggling to get on terms, not fluent 2 out, stayed on into 7th last, put under pressure, kept on, took 6th 125 yards out, no impression on those ahead.
136

7 Cepage
prominent to midfield, headway and led approaching 9th, was joined 17th, reached for 3 out, niggled along, more firmly pushed along home turn, put under pressure 2 out, headed approaching last, faded up the hill and dropped out of the places quickly, lost ground on those ahead last 150 yards and lost 6th close home. Ran a stormer, but didn’t stay.
147

8 Vintage Clouds
prominent, led 4th, joined up front 7th, headed approaching 9th, chased leader after, niggled along approaching 17th, ridden and lost place after 3 out, well held home turn, came wide approaching 2 out, no more between last 2. High enough in the weights for this year’s renewal and couldn’t stay competitive.
138

9 Atlanta Ablaze
midfield, briefly pushed along 15th, niggled after 16th, not much impression before 3 out, put under pressure home turn, kept on from 2 out, in close to last, lost ground up the hill. Didn’t make much contribution, not really put in the race, but did some good work between the last two fences.
130

10 Vivas
soon niggled along in rear, pushed along in slightly detached last after 11th, blundered 12th, passed a couple before mistake 3 out, picked off beaten ones and kept on before 2 out, no more between last 2 and carried head awkwardly, tailed off from last.
103

11 Brave Eagle
rear, mistake 2nd, slow 3rd, mistake 8th, little ground before mistake 17th, looked well held approaching 3 out, pushed along and made no ground, tailed off from 2 out.
124

12 Mulcahys Hill
midfield to rear, a little ground and midfield when mistake 14th, pushed along after 16th, lost place 17th, well back when blundered 3 out, lost further ground approaching home turn, tailed off from 2 out.
107

13 Who Dares Wins
midfield to rear, headway and midfield when went through 10th, vigorously ridden along after 17th, little impression before 3 out, weakened home turn, well held when hit 2 out, weakened further, lost places before and after last, looked heavy-legged last 150 yards, tailed off.
107

B Quarenta
in close to 1st, held up, brought down 4th.
0

F No Comment
midfield to rear, mistake 1st, fell heavily 8th. Ended up running into the fence by putting in an extra stride and treading on the take-off board of the open ditch.
0

F Elwood
midfield, fell 4th.
0

P Townshend
held up towards rear, pecked on landing 1st, headway first circuit and midfield 9th racing widest of all, further ground and prominent to midfield 15th, niggled along after 16th, lost place and midfield to rear when jumped right 3 out, weakened further, well tailed off 2 out, pulled up before last.
0

P Mister Malarky
prominent, lost place first circuit and vigorously pushed along in midfield 11th, a little headway and closer order 16th but still ridden along, dropping back when not fluent 3 out, weakened further approaching home turn, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out and stopped to a walk quicker than the other puller-uppers around him.
0

P Activial
chased leader, disputed lead 7th, headed approaching 9th, started to lose place approaching home turn first time, dropped rear 13th, pushed along 14th, tailing off when pulled up after 16th.
0

P Burbank
midfield, lost place and towards rear when mistake 13th, reminders after, mistake 15th and ridden, lost place and rear when not fluent 4 out, tailing off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Cogry
led, niggled along in front from 3rd, headed 4th, gradually lost place, struggling and pushed along in midfield after 9th, weakened further, had dropped rear when abruptly pulled up before 11th.
0

P Soupy Soups
midfield, a little keen and headway to be prominent 6th, shuffled back a little but seemed to be moving comfortably enough after 16th, niggled along at the top of the hill, close enough approaching 3 out, weakened under a ride after it, well held home turn, weakened further and markedly so on the home turn, pulled up at that point. This was a better run than his form figure suggests as he was bang there and comfortable enough at the top of the hill, but dropped out as though something went wrong after the third last.
0

P Ice Cool Champs
midfield, headway final circuit and prominent when blundered 16th, hard ridden and lost place after 17th, dropped away, last and the jockey had accepted it approaching 3 out, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.

UNIBET CHAMPION HURDLE CHALLENGE TROPHY (GRADE 1)
2m

1 Epatante
midfield with plenty of cover, a little keen, headway and prominent when not fluent 5th, progress into 3rd on the bit starting down the hill to 3 out, mistake there, ridden into 2 out, tracked 1st 2 going best home turn, pulled off the inside coming off home turn to get a clear run at the last, ridden into it, led on landing, shaken up, quickened clear, ran on up the hill, decisive. The best of a less-than-vintage bunch in 2019/20, but could yet improve, settling this the instant she was given the office.
160

2 Sharjah
held up rear, last 5th travelling smoothly, finally started to pick off rivals at the top of the hill, mistake 3 out but still on the bit after it, smooth headway into midfield, in close to 2 out, not asked for the maximum approaching home turn, had 5 in front and 5 lengths to find coming off home turn, pulled wide approaching last, closed on those ahead, nudged along before steadied into last a couple of strides before and jumped it a length and a half down, shaken up, outpaced as Epatante went for home, stayed on and drew clear of the 3rd, no chance with winner. Playing catch-up at every stage of the race under an exaggerated waiting ride – which this one doesn’t need – he was 6 lengths behind Epatante at the 5th, 3 lengths behind at the line: you do the math. Compensation in next year’s Champion is possible.
164

3 Darver Star
on edge at the start, prominent, niggled along after 5th and made a move to go 2nd a length and a bit clear of the others at the top of the hill, closer order 3 out, drew upsides jumping 2 out, shaken up, effort and led under a ride approaching last, put under pressure, was closed on, in close to last, headed, hard driven, soon lost 2nd too, stayed on at one pace, stuck to task. Proved that he belongs in Grade 1 two-mile company; having made an effort before the 1st and 2nd on this occasion, he’s arguably capable of a bit better too.
160

4 Cilaos Emery
midfield, gradually shuffled back and was towards rear when mistake 5th, moved comfortably at the top of the hill and passed a few to get into midfield, nudged along approaching 3 out, travelled better than some approaching 2 out, niggled along after, hard ridden home turn, stayed on, was 2 lengths down last, put under pressure, outpaced, kept on last 150 yards but no extra.
158

5 Petit Mouchoir
led, went 5 lengths clear at the top of the hill looking comfortable, mistake 3 out, was joined up front 2 out, niggled along home turn, soon hard ridden, headed approaching last, stuck to task and a length and a bit down jumping, put under pressure, faded, lost ground close home and was being closed on by the 6th last 75 yards. Was always going to be a sitting duck here – having said that it’s astonishing that he hasn’t won something in the last two and a half years. Surely a victory in one of the trials – or even one of the Leopardstown Grade 1s at a push – is in the offing.
156

6 Silver Streak
midfield, mistakes 3rd, 4th and 5th, niggled along and a little headway when mistake 3 out, niggled along, put under pressure after 2 out, outpaced and looked held home turn, kept on under a hand ride, some 8 or 9 lengths back last, kept on well last 125 yards and was closing on the 5th at the post. Yet more costly errors cost him any chance, this time at half the hurdles.
155

7 Supasundae
midfield and soon nudged along, more firmly niggled along after 2nd, pushed along after 5th and a little headway to be prominent at the top of the hill, closer order and prominent when not fluent 3 out, every chance under a ride approaching 2 out, hard ridden approaching home turn, tracked leaders under a hard ride home turn, put under pressure, outpaced approaching last and rider seemed to accept defeat nearing it, jumped it some 5 lengths behind, driven and no extra up the hill, lost 6th and looked a little heavy-legged close home. With this one’s off-the-bit run style things were always going to be too quick for him in the Champion Hurdle, and 2m4f will always suit him better – maybe even another go at 3m now he’s a bit older.
153

8 Ballyandy
prominent, shuffled back a little when nudged along approaching 4th, lost a bit more ground approaching 5th, closer order looking comfortable starting down the hill to 3 out, nudged along disputing 3rd approaching 2 out, shaken up after it, lost place, looked held home turn, hard ridden, put under pressure and no extra approaching last, hard driven up the hill, no more.
151

9 Pentland Hills
held up, mistake 4th, hadn’t made much ground by the top of the hill, nudged along approaching 3 out, again nudged along at most between there and 2 out, pulled wide nearing it, in close, pushed along approaching home turn, kept on without making an impression approaching last under a hand ride, hard driven up the hill, no more, if anything losing ground in the last 100 yards, made no contribution.
148

10 Darasso
held up, niggled along away from 3rd, pushed along away from 5th, ridden along 3 out, looked well held 2 out, hard ridden, turned for home in 12th or 13th, kept on a bit under a hand ride passing beaten ones, no more up the hill, made no contribution.
147

11 Fusil Raffles
held up, raced outer, headway and midfield after 3rd, jumped into the back of a rival 5th (that was Not So Sleepy), pushed along at the top of the hill, not much impression before mistake 3 out, ridden along, struggling approaching 2 out, weakened approaching home turn, well held approaching last, passed beaten ones up the hill and appeared to have running in him at the line. Ran an odd race, but the bigger picture here is that this one isn’t good enough for the Champion Hurdle.
141

12 Gumball
midfield on outer, headway and prominent 4th, mistake 5th, pushed along after 3 out, no impression going to 2 out, hung right and lost place approaching home turn, well held approaching last, weakened further up the hill.
138

13 Call Me Lord
midfield on inner, mistake 4th and niggled along away from it, moved comfortably enough 5th, niggled along after 3 out, lost place under a ride approaching 2 out, had dropped to rear by home turn, looked heavy-legged as weakened approaching last, tailed off.
137

14 Le Patriote
slowly away, rear, starting to pass rivals when mistake 5th, niggled along at the top of the hill widest of all and made good ground into midfield, sustained effort and prominent 3 out, niggled along approaching 2 out, jumped that well but soon hard ridden, wandered, weakened home turn, dropped back through the field under pressure approaching last, weakened further up the hill, tailed off.
136

15 Coeur Sublime
midfield, blundered 5th, moved comfortably enough going to 3 out, soon niggled along, little impression before 2 out, pushed along approaching home turn, weakened, looked heavy-legged approaching last, was last over it, eased right down, tailed off.
112

P Not So Sleepy
stoked along to make a start, prominent, mistake 3rd, niggled along away from 5th, lost place and pushed along in midfield at the top of the hill, weakened further and rear 3 out, continued to lose ground and tailing off in a detached last when mistake 2 out, eased right off, pulled up after home turn.
0

P Cornerstone Lad
chased leader, not fluent 2nd and niggled along away from it, niggled again approaching 5th, hard ridden away from it and lost place quickly, dropped to last and eased, pulled up before 3 out. Often the toughest to pass, here he wasn’t going comfortably as early as the 2nd and shaped as though something went wrong, sensibly eased right down when it was clear nothing was going to happen.

CLOSE BROTHERS MARES´ HURDLE (REGISTERED AS THE DAVID NICHOLSON MARES´ HURDLE) (GRADE 1)
2m 4f

1 Honeysuckle
tracked leaders, led 5th, headed 6th, chased leader at the top of the hill, relegated to 3rd but not asked for an effort as pace increased approaching 2 out, pushed along approaching home turn, got a split on inside rail home turn, started her effort and led, ridden along, wandered a little as 1st 2 pulled clear approaching last, steadied into it but horse took off out of the jockey’s hands, hard driven, stayed on well last 175 yards, ears flat back, pulled out the necessary all the way to the line. What a genuine mare, left it all on the track in this fine finish – the form suggests she wouldn’t have beaten Epatante had she run in the Champion, but she’d have been within 5 lengths; so this improving mare hasn’t got a lot to find to get there.
158

2 Benie Des Dieux
midfield, a little keen, headway and prominent going comfortably after 7th, not asked to improve and moved equally well approaching 2 out, pulled wide nearing it and quickly drew upsides leaders, travelled best of the field approaching home turn, shaken up as Honeysuckle arguably got first run on the inner, chased winner approaching last, 1st 2 pulled clear, changed legs some 75 yards off last, hard driven,  every chance under pressure up the hill, stayed on well, closed a little in last 50 yards but always just held. A lot was made of Honeysuckle’s opportunistic run against the inside rail on the home turn, but she’s been beaten by an improving mare and may well come off second best if and when they meet again.
158

3 Elfile
disputed lead, wandered approaching 2nd, allowed Stormy Ireland to go on and chased leader after 3rd, tracked leaders from 5th, held place at the top of the hill, briefly niggled along and effort to move upsides Stormy Ireland as pace increased approaching 2 out, steadied into it, pushed along, lost place and squeezed out between rivals home turn, soon looked held, kept on approaching last as 1st 2 pulled clear, went away from 4th last 150 yards but no impression on 1st 2.
151

4 Roksana
midfield, hadn’t made ground but at most nudged along approaching 3 out, moved comfortably enough but effort delayed between there and 2 out, jumped it in 5th and pushed along after, one pace under a ride approaching last, chance of 3rd jumping, carried tail high, no extra up the hill last 175 yards.
146

5 Stormy Ireland
disputed lead, took clear lead after 3rd at a medium gallop, was closed on after 4th, headed 5th, led 6th, was a length and a half up at the top of the hill, quickened the pace approaching 2 out, narrow lead jumping, ridden along, headed home turn, soon no more as 1st 2 pulled clear, weakened approaching last and jumped it in 5th, continued to lose ground up the hill and was being closed on by the 6th last 50 yards.
137

6 Cap Soleil
held up last, was bumped 1st, made a place 4th, still just about in touch in last pair but pushed along approaching 3 out, ridden and lost touch with the main group approaching 2 out, niggled along, no impression under a ride home turn, took modest 6th last, kept on and was closing on the 5th final strides.
136

7 Lady Buttons
prominent to midfield, keen, hit 2nd, mistake 5th, pushed along and struggling to hold place at the top of the hill, mistake 3 out, hard ridden, kept on, within 6 lengths 2 out, put under pressure, weakened off home turn, looked heavy-legged approaching last, emptied and dropped further back last 150 yards, tailed off. She wasn’t expected to take a hand but this was one race too many for the season perhaps, a bit off her game here – she’s better than this over hurdles and fences.
128

8 Popong
midfield, not fluent 1st, mistake 5th, niggled along after 7th, pushed along and started to lose touch with the main group after 3 out, ridden along, well held 2 out, no more under pressure approaching last, weakened further, tailed off.
123

9 Desaray Girl
held up, jumped markedly left 1st and bumped rival, dropped to last and a little slow 4th, slower still 6th and became slightly detached, hadn’t lost further ground but struggling in last at the top of the hill, started to tail off from 3 out, left alone from 2 out, well tailed off home turn, trailed in.

NORTHERN TRUST COMPANY NOVICES´ HANDICAP CHASE (LISTED RACE)
2m 4f

1 Imperial Aura
prominent, chased leader 12th, moved comfortably approaching 3 out, ridden into it and drew upsides leader, led home turn, ridden into 2 out, ridden along and stayed on to pull 3 lengths clear by last, ridden out up the hill, stayed on well to maintain clear lead, decisive.
148

2 Galvin
midfield to rear on inner, was bumped and mistake 1st, midfield going comfortably 12th, unsighted and slightly hampered 3 out, passed rivals on the bit approaching home turn, pulled wide (not widest) and produced to challenge going comfortably turning in, a length and a half down 2 out, rather cajoled along between last 2 and carried head a bit to one side, about the same distance down last, awkward head carriage still in evidence starting up the hill, hard driven, pulled clear of the 3rd, jockey lost right rein about 125 yards out, stuck to task but no impression on Imperial Aura. This one makes it difficult for the jockey, hence the exaggerated waiting tactics usually employed, and the horse had got the better of Davy Russell before he lost his rein on the run-in.
144

3 Hold The Note
midfield, closer order 12th, niggled along approaching 3 out, more firmly ridden along away from it, still in contention under a ride 2 out, ridden and outpaced between last 2, jumped last in 8 lengths 5th, driven, kept on, took 3rd up the hill, no impression on 1st 2. Good run, but should go over 3m going forward (already has a piece of good form at the longer trip).
138

4 Whatmore
prominent to midfield, mistake 12th, niggled along after 3 out, effort and tracked leaders against inside rail home turn, about 2 or 3 lengths down when left in 4th 2 out, hard ridden, outpaced, steadied into and hit last, kept on under a ride, stuck to task to take well-held 4th close home.
130

5 Beakstown
midfield on inner, not fluent 2nd, closer order and prominent 13th, niggled along after 3 out, tracked leaders home turn, soon pushed along, hard driven and one pace from 2 out, looked held in 3rd last, driven and faded up the hill, lost 3rd then 4th inside last 175 yards, no more close home. Stuck to the task but didn’t come up the hill that well.
131

6 Mitchouka
midfield, had dropped rear when not fluent 8th, passed a couple by 13th, nudged along, a lot to do when in close to 3 out, pushed along, started to pick up approaching home turn, had 10 in front and 8 lengths to find turning in, pulled wide, sustained effort, no extra between last 2 racing wide, kept on from last, nearest finish. Was going on well at the end having been given a bit to do and may well improve on this going forward.
123

7 Highest Sun
midfield, shuffled back a bit when not fluent 9th and pushed along away from it, mistake 11th, pushed along approaching 12th, made some ground approaching 3 out, hard ridden away from it, sustained effort and closed on leaders approaching home turn, faded turning in, looked held when caught a bump 2 out, faded further approaching last, kept on last 150 yards to take 7th, no impression on those ahead.
124

8 Champagne Court
prominent, jumped a bit sideways 13th and niggled along away from it, niggled again approaching 3 out where mistake, pushed along approaching home turn, faded approaching 2 out where bumped rival, well held last, kept on up the hill but lost 7th place post.
127

9 Daly Tiger
midfield, lost ground and midfield to rear when pushed along away from 13th, a bit to do at the top of the hill, not hard ridden approaching 3 out, shaken up after it, stayed on under a ride approaching home turn, raced wide and further progress to be at most 3 lengths down home turn, half a chance when mistake 2 out, weakened under pressure after, well held when ran down last to left, no extra up the hill. A better run than his finishing position as, though ridden along, he turned up to hold half a chance turning for home.
121

10 Torpillo
chased leader, hit 4th, shuffled back by 12th but remained prominent, made ground going comfortably approaching 3 out, moved just as well until niggled along some 100 yards off home turn, more firmly pushed along turning in, weakened approaching 2 out, continued to lose ground and places before and after last. Didn’t stay.
124

11 Earlofthecotswolds
held up, nudged along after 7th, not fluent 8th, niggled along in rear of the main group after 13th, a little headway racing wide when was bumped 3 out, hard ridden, put under pressure approaching home turn, no impression approaching 2 out, weakened further before and after last, tailed off.
108

12 Paint The Dream
midfield, lost place and rear before mistake 11th, struggling under a ride 13th, kept on a bit but little impression after 3 out, well held when mistake then badly hampered 2 out, weakened, tailed off.
100

13 Trainwreck
prominent, ridden into 13th and niggled along away from it, held place at the top of the hill, in close to 3 out, weakened after, ridden and dropped away through field, stride shortening, last and tailing off 2 out, about 35 lengths behind leader last, trailed in.
75

F Jarveys Plate
midfield when unsighted, slightly hampered and fell 3rd.
0

F Precious Cargo
tracked leaders, led 5th, had gone 2 or 3 lengths clear by 9th, took off on the wrong leg 10th, in close to 13th, moved comfortably in front approaching 3 out, soon ridden, headed home turn, at most half a length down and still in contention when fell 2 out. May have hung on for a place.
0

P Champagne Mystery
led, a little keen, headed 5th, mistake 8th, tracked leaders 13th, holding place when in close to 3 out, bumped on landing and rider unbalanced, lost place quickly, dropped away in rear approaching home turn, detached and tailing off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

P De Plotting Shed
held up, slightly hampered 3rd, niggled along in rear after 7th, mistake 11th, lost place and pushed along after 13th, rear and slightly detached when pulled up after 3 out.
0

P Lord Schnitzel
last, niggled along after 2nd, headway from 9th, raced wide, midfield 11th, mistake 12th and pushed along away from it, was bumped in the air 3 out, ridden and weakened approaching home turn, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Espoir De Guye
midfield to rear, went through 6th, closer order 9th, raced wide, further headway and prominent approaching 13th, pushed along approaching 3 out, weakened and was in rear jumping, left alone, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

U Knight In Dubai
held up, brought down 3rd.

NATIONAL HUNT CHALLENGE CUP AMATEUR RIDERS´ NOVICES´ CHASE (GRADE 2)
3m 6f

1 Ravenhill
held up, was bumped 2nd, in close to 5th, headway wide and midfield 12th, headway and prominent 19th whilst sitting a few lengths off the leaders, good headway down the hill and closed on leader approaching 3 out, jumped it at most half a length down, travelled much the best as disputed lead approaching home turn, shaken up, didn’t assert, 1st 2 pulled clear, together 2 out, ridden, the better jump last, led, pulled a length and a half clear, idled but stayed on well enough to maintain lead last 150 yards. All in the timing from Jamie Codd. Might have had a bit in hand in the end through idling.
148

2 Lord Du Mesnil
chased leader, along with Springfield Fox broke clear of rest by 6th, mistake 7th, led 9th, 1st 2 not so far ahead 10th, went 3 lengths up 11th, jumped right 12th, not so far ahead next, left clear 16th, pressed on from 20th, was closed on approaching 3 out and was joined jumping, ridden approaching home turn, found extra turning in and disputed lead as 1st 2 pulled clear, together 2 out, ridden and stayed on, hit last, couldn’t go with Ravenhill, hard driven, stayed on, stuck to task but no impression last 150 yards, went down with honours. What a run to finish what had been a most productive season, and in 2020/21 the Nationals pick themselves as his targets.
146

3 Lamanver Pippin
midfield, headway and tracked leaders approaching 13th, mistake 16th and rider nearly unseated, niggled along from 20th, closing on leader when mistake 3 out, pushed along and lost ground on 1st 2 after then lost 3rd approaching home turn under a ride, looked held in 4th 2 out, kept on between last 2, wasn’t losing any further ground on the 3rd when pecked on landing and left in that position last, all out up the hill and was being closed on by the 4th but held on to the place, tailed off in relation to 1st 2. Took the bronze, but clearly didn’t see out the trip; showed up well to the third last though and should take a couple of 3m handicap chases in 2020/21.
118

4 Forza Milan
midfield, gradually lost place and in rear when not fluent 13th, made places going comfortably and disputed 6th with around 15 lengths to find 20th, niggled along, no impression and looked held when put under pressure in 7th after 3 out, passed beaten ones home turn, closing on the 4th when overjumped 2 out, left 4th last some 5 lengths behind the 3rd, kept on but unable to get the place, tailed off in relation to 1st 2.
115

5 Smoking Gun
tracked leaders, nudged along and shuffled back to midfield 15th, niggled along and prominent 17th, niggled along and lost place 19th, midfield and struggling 20th, no impression under a push before mistake 3 out, put under pressure approaching home turn, kept on a bit but tailed off in 6th 2 out, was left 5th last, no further impression, tailed off.
102

6 Newtide
prominent, tracked leaders from 16th, chased leader from 17th, ridden approaching 3 out, started to lose place under a ride after, put under pressure and looked heavy-legged approaching home turn, weakened markedly and last one still going 2 out, continued to weaken and tailed off between last 2, clambered over last, trailed in.
63

P Ocean Cove
tracked leaders, mistake 16th, lost place final circuit, struggling in rear 20th, tailed off when pulled up after 3 out.
0

P Some Can Dance
midfield, bumped rival 2nd, mistake 7th, mistake 8th and pushed along away from it, pecked on landing 14th, lost ground and rear when mistake 16th, very slow 18th, mistake 20th, weakened, tailed off when pulled up before 3 out.
0

P Clondaw Cian
held up, slow 11th, niggled along away from 13th, jumped right and struggling 15th, went right again 18th, all over the place 19th and pulled up after.
0

P The Hollow Ginge
prominent to midfield, not fluent 2nd, headway and prominent 4th, shuffled back 5th, midfield when not fluent 9th, blundered 11th, lost place and towards rear approaching 16th, struggling when went right and nearly off the course 17th, tried to refuse 18th, barely clambered over it and pulled up.
0

P Redzor
held up, lost place and rear 18th, pushed along and struggling approaching 20th when last of those still going, lost further ground, tailed off when pulled up after 3 out.
0

U Anteros
held up last, started a move going comfortably and midfield 17th, was hampered and rider unseated on the approach to 18th, mistake there when loose. A strange departure as his rider was unseated on the take-off side of the 18th in a chain reaction to the riderless Springfield Fox’s demolishing the rails on the approach, some horses taking evasive action and Anteros’s rider unbalanced and falling off. This 12 year-old was still travelling okay at the time and has shown enough to be of interest in veterans’ chases if kept in training next season.
0

U Carefully Selected
held up, headway and midfield when mistake 6th, a lot to do when mistake 20th, still some 15 lengths down at the top of the hill, started a move going comfortably approaching 3 out and closed on those ahead, niggled along approaching home turn and took 3rd under a push turning in, unable to go with 1st 2, mistake 2 out when some 4 or 5 lengths ahead of the 4th, no more, looked tired and was losing ground on 1st 2 under a ride when unseated rider last. Looked a dog-tired horse at the end, after an exaggerated hold-up ride and then making ground up quickly enough going to the third last.
[117]

U Springfield Fox
led, mistake 1st, along with Lord Du Mesnil broke clear of rest by 6th, mistake 9th and headed, 1st 2 not so far ahead 10th, was bumped 12th, mistake and unseated rider 16th, continued riderless and trashed some running rail on the approach to 18th.

Day Two, Wednesday March 11th

BALLYMORE NOVICES´ HURDLE (GRADE 1) (REGISTERED AS THE BARING BINGHAM)
2m 5f

1 Envoi Allen
midfield, moved comfortably, switched inner to middle to get a clear view of 3 out, headway after to go 3rd, effort delayed and had 4 lengths to make up on 1st 2 approaching 2 out, in close to it, shaken up, was 4 or 5 lengths down home turn, ran on under a hand ride, 1st 3 clear, made up that ground and a bit more to lead by a length last, ridden clear, stayed on well up the hill, workmanlike and decisive. Delivered the goods, as the betting expected, and a bit better in relation to the horses he beat as well – the winning distance was 4 1/4 lengths, but he was that amount behind them coming off the home turn, so this must be some horse to make up 8 lengths in two furlongs.
141

2 Easywork
tracked leaders, raced keenly approaching 4th, chased leader approaching 5th, moved comfortably enough starting down the hill to 3 out, smooth ground to draw upsides leader approaching 2 out, niggled along after and chased The Big Getaway home turn, 1st 3 clear, put under pressure approaching last, stayed on, hung left nearing it, headed by Envoi Allen jumping at the same time as he took the leader’s measure, hard driven, stayed on to pull clear of 3rd, no chance with winner.
137

3 The Big Getaway
chased leader, drew upsides leader when hit 3rd, led after, drew 3 lengths clear starting down the hill to 3 out, mistake there, was joined approaching 2 out but still moved comfortably enough, niggled along after and found extra to lead approaching home turn, stayed on under a ride, 1st 3 clear, was closed on approaching last, headed before it, faded, stuck to task but looked heavy-legged up the hill. Looks a chaser on TV pictures and that’s sure to be what he’s doing next season, whilst shaping as though this trip will be a maximum, although maybe as he was the first to go for home, his finding more off the bend meant that he had nothing left for the hill. He ought to get 3m on pedigree (half-brother to winning chaser at the trip Flaming Dawn).
133

4 The Big Breakaway
midfield, niggled along after 2nd, pushed along after 6th, ridden into 7th, pushed along and tapped for toe at the top of the hill, kept on under a push from 3 out to next, put under pressure, unable to go with 1st 3 approaching last, well held and left alone nearing it, mistake, stuck to task up the hill and kept on nicely last 100 yards, no impression on 1st 3. The whole way round it looked like the pace was too quick for him – even though they weren’t flat out from an early stage – but he’s done okay and presumably now goes novice chasing (half-brother to Kildisart and will stay 3m).
127

5 Mossy Fen
prominent, raced wide approaching 6th where mistake, niggled along after, held place from 7th and 6 or 7 lengths off leader starting down the hill to 3 out, pushed along and faded approaching 2 out, well held home turn, hung left under pressure and little impression approaching last, no more up the hill.
118

6 Shan Blue
held up, dropped to last when hit 4th, niggled along in last pair after 7th, last of the main group before passed a beaten rival approaching 3 out, little impression under a push approaching 2 out where dived at it, ridden, well back home turn, not knocked about approaching last, passed beaten ones under a hand ride up the hill and going on okay at the end, made no contribution.
114

7 Sporting John
prominent, lost some ground and midfield to rear after 4th, pushed along in midfield at the top of the hill, no impression between 3 out and 2 out, well held home turn, left alone before mistake last, no more, passed a beaten one late, tailed off.
111

8 Longhouse Poet
prominent, not fluent 7th, niggled along at the top of the hill, more firmly ridden along after 3 out, faded approaching 2 out, put under pressure, no more home turn, well held approaching last, not fluent, weakened and lost a place up the hill, tailed off.
110

9 Decor Irlandais
held up rear, mistake 5th, passed a couple and pulled wide approaching 3 out, took off too early there, ridden, kept on without making an impression approaching 2 out, put under pressure approaching home turn, couldn’t find more approaching last, mistake, weakened up the hill, looked heavy-legged last 150 yards, tailed off.
102

10 Shakem Up’Arry
led, headed after 3rd, shuffled back approaching 5th but remained prominent, mistake 7th, still moved comfortably till nudged along and lost place quickly after 3 out, weakened further and last/tailing off 2 out, eased right down, trailed in.
85

P Son Of Camas
midfield, niggled along approaching 6th, more vigorously pushed along after 7th, lost place and rear of the main group going down the hill, weakened markedly before mistake 3 out, eased off, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Getaway Fred
held up, raced wide and headway into midfield 5th, niggled along and lost place, rear after 6th, pushed along and struggling after 7th, became detached by the top of the hill, tailed off 3 out, pulled up before 2 out.

RSA INSURANCE NOVICES´ CHASE (GRADE 1)
3m

1 Champ
midfield to rear, a bit less than fluent 11th, mistake 12th, slow 13th and pushed along away from it, in close to 14th, not fluent 15th and shuffled back to rear, raced wide, niggled along after 16th and headway into midfield at the top of the hill, closed up going more comfortably after 3 out, niggled along home turn as 1st 2 broke clear, outpaced and some 4 or 5 lengths down when pecked on landing 2 out, ridden, 8 lengths down last, hard driven, stayed on strongly final 175 yards as 1st 2 tired, led close home. Going forward there needs to be improvement in his jumping, but his resolution can’t be faulted; not shouting ‘Gold Cup horse’ yet though.
144

2 Minella Indo
led or disputed, chased leader from 5th, took off too early 16th, travelled comfortably going down the hill to 3 out, niggled along approaching home turn and pressed on with Allaho, disputed lead 4 or 5 lengths clear 2 out, ridden and stayed on into definite lead approaching last, mistake, disputed lead starting up the hill, put under pressure, stayed on, wandered right 125 yards out, tired, headed, no extra as Champ swept by, stayed on to get 2nd, no chance with winner final strides. Along with Allaho he was asked for a big effort approaching the home turn, which ultimately did for him as he had nothing left for the last 100 yards. If we’re talking 2021 Gold Cup contenders, this one is preferred to Champ at this stage.
143

3 Allaho
led or disputed, led 5th, some 3 lengths clear 10th, mistake 12th, travelled comfortably in a length lead going down the hill to 3 out, niggled along approaching home turn and pressed on with Minella Indo, disputed lead 4 or 5 lengths clear when pecked on landing 2 out, headed, hard ridden, steadied into and in close to last but the better jump, drew upsides rival, hard driven, stayed on, might have led 75 yards out but immediately headed as Champ swept by, lost 2nd close home, no more. Left it all on the track but, along with Minella Indo, ended up having his chance compromised by being asked for a major effort approaching the home turn, having nothing left to give in the last 100 yards as a result.
142

4 Battleoverdoyen
windy jump 1st, midfield, raced wide final circuit, closer order 14th, further ground and tracked leaders travelling comfortably going down the hill to 3 out, looked strong approaching home turn, asked for an effort after 1st 2 drew clear, ridden and lost place turning in, well held 2 out, kept on between last 2, looked ungainly as ridden along up the hill, no impression, got tired and looked heavy-legged last 150 yards. He looked off his game when falling at the last behind Faugheen at Leopardstown the time before and he was beaten in strides when asked for his effort here, shaping as though there’s a physical issue and running below his best at the Cheltenham Festival for the second year in a row.
120

5 Aye Right
prominent to midfield, made ground to track leaders approaching 4th, mistake 5th, shuffled back and midfield when nudged along away from 14th, had made up ground when mistake 16th and lost place, niggled along and made up ground going down the hill to 3 out, pushed along and lost place approaching home turn, well held turning in, weakened further, tailed off last, no more. Ran above his odds for a long way.
107

6 Slate House
midfield to rear, lost ground and rear when niggled along away from 9th, ridden along away from 16th, still in touch though rear approaching 3 out, hard ridden approaching home turn, no impression, well held when mistake and hampered 2 out, dropped away, tailed off, eased right down.
74

F Copperhead
tracked leaders, shuffled back a little before 4th but remained prominent, not fluent 9th, niggled along approaching 11th, mistake 14th, held place and niggled along at the top of the hill, hard driven away from 3 out, weakened approaching home turn, in rear and tailing off when blundered 2 out, looked heavy-legged and tired when crumpled to the ground in an undignified heap last. Clearly very, very tired, and with the chances of getting the £2,619 for sixth place disappearing, he shouldn’t have been asked to jump the last. It wouldn’t be surprising if this experience has a lasting adverse effect on him.
0

F Easy Game
held up, flat-backed jump 5th, not fluent 9th, headway and midfield 12th, not fluent 15th, lost place and rear when mistake 16th and ridden along away from it, pushed along but in touch starting down the hill to 3 out, hard ridden away from it, weakened quickly approaching home turn, tailed off 2 out, very tired when fell last. He’d probably have got sixth, and thus the prize money for it, but like Copperhead, so tired was he that he shouldn’t have been asked to jump it.
0

P Pym
prominent, shuffled back and midfield 4th, had dropped to rear when mistake 11th, pushed along away from 12th and beginning to struggle, losing ground in last when mistake 13th and pulled up immediately.
0

U Castlebawn West
held up last, slightly detached when niggled along away from 10th, mistake 12th, blundered 14th and rider nearly unseated, came away from it in a detached last, made up ground and in touch though rear going down the hill to 3 out, raced wide, passed a few and midfield under a ride, outpaced as leaders went for home and looked held when blundered and unseated rider 2 out.

CORAL CUP HANDICAP HURDLE (GRADE 3)
2m 5f

1 Dame De Compagnie
midfield, steady pace, closer order 4th, prominent 5th, mistake 6th, ridden into 3 out, headway after going comfortably and only a length down 2 out, niggled along off home turn and soon more firmly pushed along approaching last, drew upsides jumping, hard driven, led 175 yards out, ran on to draw clear last 125 yards, ultimately decisive. Continuing her progress, on this form if she were to meet Honeysuckle and they carried the weights they had in their respective races at this meeting, Dame De Compagnie would be beaten 3 lengths, so not a lot to find going forward to take a mares’ Grade 1.
148

2 Black Tears
prominent, steady pace, tracked leaders after 7th, didn’t get a clear sight of 3 out but came away from that travelling comfortably, in close to 2 out, niggled along away from it, got a split coming off home turn and produced to challenge between horses approaching last, momentarily travelled best, pushed along nearing it, changed legs and wandered, led a neck and the better jump, hard ridden, stayed on, no extra as Dame De Compagnie asserted in final 125 yards, stuck to task, pulled clear of 3rd but no extra close home. A top effort and no disgrace in finishing runner-up.
150

3 Thosedaysaregone
midfield, steady pace, some headway and just about prominent after 7th, nudged along approaching 3 out, in close to it, again nudged along at most approaching 2 out, closer order and turned for home in 3 lengths 5th, pushed along, stayed on, switched inner and closed on leaders approaching last, at most a length down jumping, hung left, kept on, no extra under a ride last 150 yards. Got there, then hung his chance away, probably doing enough to suggest he stays this trip all the same.
139

4 Cracking Smart
half asleep in the standing start and vigorously ridden along to make a start, last, a bit slow 3rd, pushed along away from 4th and made a place, just about midfield under a ride 7th, a bit to do approaching 3 out. pushed along away from it, kept on, hard ridden away from 2 out, turned for home in 9th with some 6 or 7 lengths to find, put under pressure approaching last, stayed on, steadied into and mistake last, sustained effort after last under strong pressure, just got 4th, nearest finish. Wearing blinkers, in stark contrast to last year’s Coral Cup when he travelled better and led from the home turn to the last (when wearing cheekpieces), he put next to nothing into this for much of the way, then came alive after the second last.
148

5 Honest Vic
tracked leaders, steady pace, in close to 3rd, moved comfortably after 7th, ridden into 3 out, within a length travelling comfortably approaching 2 out, pushed along after it, turned for home a length down under a ride, stayed on, every chance till faded nearing last, looked held jumping, driven, kept on, passed a beaten one after last, stayed on well but not quite get 4th. Has gone up the weights quite a bit this season and this is a career-best.
142

6 Bachasson
held up rear, mistake 6th, in last 4 with 10 lengths to find at the top of the hill, moved comfortably and not asked for a big effort before or after 3 out, nudged along at most approaching 2 out, passed a few and niggled along approaching home turn, soon more firmly ridden along and had 9 or 10 lengths to find under a ride turning in with 11 in front, put under pressure, stayed on and closed on those ahead approaching last, was 5 lengths behind jumping, driven and just kept on at the same pace up the hill, passed a beaten one late but no further impression. A bit late on the scene after being too far back in this steadily-run race at the third last, all the first five positioned midfield or better after the 7th.
149

7 Alfa Mix
chased leader, steady pace, disputed it from 3rd, moved comfortably enough after 7th, still comfortable when led 3 out, nudged along approaching 2 out, pushed along approaching home turn, led a length turning in, soon driven, every chance till headed, wandered a little and started to fade nearing last, took off too early, looked held soon after it, weakened final 150 yards and lost several places last 75 yards. There to be shot at between the third last and the next, it’s no surprise that he didn’t get home but he’s one to note for next year’s renewal – hopefully he can be dropped in a bit more.
142

8 Birchdale
held up, at most nudged along from 7th and started a move at the top of the hill, midfield travelling comfortably before and after 3 out, effort delayed approaching 2 out, mistake, pushed along, no headway and turned for home with 12 in front and 10 lengths to find, put under pressure, stayed on and closed a little, some 6 or 7 lengths down when mistake last, driven and flattened out last 175 yards, lost ground on those ahead and was being closed on by the 9th last strides.
144

9 Coko Beach
midfield, nudged along after 7th, more firmly niggled along starting down the hill to 2 out, was badly hampered there, hard ridden, looked held home turn under a ride, pulled wide, kept on a bit under pressure approaching last but essentially no impression, stuck to task and closed on the 8th final strides. At a push he’d have been 7th but for being hampered and doesn’t jump off the page for future engagements on the strength of this.
142

10 Protektorat
midfield, moved comfortably after 7th, raced wide going down the hill to 3 out, niggled along and made ground approaching 2 out, within 2 lengths jumping, shaken up, further ground to hold every chance under a ride but was quite wide home turn, no more and began to fade approaching last, left alone nearing it and allowed to jump it in his own time, no more up the hill. If you know Protektorat, then you know that everything you wouldn’t like to see his rider do from the third last in a race, his rider did – make up ground too quick, turn for home too wide, turn for home with no cover – and a blow-out was the result.
140

11 Eglantine Du Seuil
midfield, briefly nudged along away from 6th, travelled comfortably enough in midfield towards inner approaching 3 out, prominent to midfield when niggled along after it, more firmly pushed along approaching 2 out, some 12 lengths back with 13 in front home turn, kept on without making an impression approaching last, no more up the hill, weakened final 100 yards and lost a couple of places. Didn’t stay.
144

12 Golan Fortune
held up, in close to 4th, niggled along after, midfield to rear after 7th, moved more comfortably going to 3 out, pushed along after it, beginning to look held when mistake 2 out and slightly hampered, hard driven, no impression and 15th some 12 or 13 lengths down home turn, kept on a little under a hand ride approaching last, sustained effort up the hill and nearly took 11th place post.
127

13 Burrows Edge
prominent, not fluent 6th, niggled along away from 7th, ridden along after 3 out, holding place and still a chance when pecked badly on landing 2 out, ridden, was 6th home turn some 5 lengths down, kept on under a firm hand ride till weakened nearing last, slightly hampered, no more, continued to weaken up the hill.
131

14 Fagan
held up, ridden into 7th and pushed along away from it, last pair at the top of the hill, at most nudged along approaching 3 out, niggled along away from it, a bit to do in midfield to rear when blundered 2 out and was slightly hampered, hard ridden, turned for home in 17th some 15 lengths down, put under pressure, stayed on approaching last, no extra when not fluent there, weakened up the hill, looked heavy-legged passing post.
131

15 Sayo
midfield to rear, very slow 1st and rear, not fluent 5th, slow 6th, in last pair at the top of the hill, raced widest of all but headway going comfortably into midfield by 3 out, niggled along away from it, held place till blundered 2 out and lost back end on landing, lost place, last of main group home turn around 20 lengths down, kept on a bit under a ride approaching last, little impression, again kept on up the hill and had running in him at the line.
134

16 Traffic Fluide
midfield, pushed along after 7th, lost place under a ride approaching 3 out, in last pair jumping, lost further ground under a ride and detached from main group/tailing off 2 out, no more, kept on a bit last 150 yards to beat tiring beaten ones. Lacks the necessary pace for a no-quarter-given handicap hurdle and would be better off returning to fences.
123

17 Ballymoy
midfield, raced wide, nudged along after 7th, good ground and well placed in prominent position at the top of the hill moving well enough, in close to 3 out, pushed along away from it, held place, every chance 2 out, ridden and lost place approaching home turn, put under pressure, well held approaching last, weakened and didn’t look to be striding out fluently 75 yards off it, weakened further up the hill, tailed off.
128

18 The Mighty Don
prominent, blundered 4th, lost place and midfield, ridden into 7th and hard ridden away from it, dropped rear at the top of the hill, last and struggling under a ride approaching 3 out, tailing off when mistake 2 out, around 20 lengths down and no earthly chance when picked off a beaten one approaching last, passed more beaten ones on the post. Old habits and all that with this one, albeit over a trip too short these days (was in the Pertemps Final in 2018).
122

19 Kilfenora
prominent on outer, shuffled back to midfield when mistake 7th and pushed along away from it, squeezed out between rivals and lost ground at the top of the hill, mistake 3 out, kept on under a push and prominent to midfield when mistake 2 out, hard ridden, weakened, well held home turn, weakened further up the hill, tailed off. This one’s had a great season but, off a whopping 154, this was probably a run too many.
125

20 Top Moon
led at steady pace, in close to 3rd, disputed it from there, looked comfortable enough after 7th, started to lose place approaching 3 out and pushed along away from it, midfield 2 out, turned for home in 10th some 7 lengths down, weakened under a push approaching last, eased nearing it, allowed to complete in own time, tailed off.
124

F Canardier
midfield, raced with strange head carriage (low and to one side), niggled along after 7th, moved more comfortably going to 3 out, briefly pushed along away from it, switched middle-inner to middle-outer going to 2 out, shaken up and was bumped on landing, hard ridden, stayed on from home turn, hung left a little approaching last, in with a chance of a place when fell. Would probably have been 6th to 8th.
[145]

P Champagne Well
prominent, nudged along away from 7th, a little ground and every chance within a length approaching 3 out, pushed along away from it, held place, took off too early 2 out, pecked badly on landing and went badly left hampering a rival as tried to recover, lost place and midfield under a ride approaching home turn, weakened, dropping right away when pulled up before last.
0

P Stratum
held up, mistake 3rd, raced inner, towards rear and a bit to do after 7th, struggling when ridden along after 3 out having not made any ground, tailed off under a push 2 out, pulled up before last.
0

P Franco De Port
tracked leaders, moved comfortably on inner till mistake 7th, shuffled back a little and nudged along, not hard ridden as lost place going down the hill, midfield 3 out, allowed to drop right away and tailed off last 2 out, pulled up after. Presumably something went amiss here as the jockey wasn’t exactly animated after the third last.
0

U Chesterfield
held up, niggled along away from 6th, in last 5 after next, pushed along after 3 out, not making much impression though keeping on when mistake 2 out, rider unbalanced and eventually unseated.

BETWAY QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE (GRADE 1)
2m

1 Politologue
led 1st, brushed 2nd, hit 9th, moved comfortably approaching 3 out, moved best approaching home turn, pushed along turning in, stayed on and had gone 4 lengths clear by 2 out, hard driven between last 2, was 6 lengths up last, ridden out, went further clear, wandered/tired up the hill, all out but never in danger, unchallenged. With Altior and Chacun Pour Soi withdrawn and surely something amiss with Defi Du Seuil, nobody was good enough to challenge him on the day, and given that he was legless in the final 150 yards, you fancy any of those three rivals will beat him another time.
165

2 Dynamite Dollars
raced 3rd or 4th, headway and disputed 2nd from 4th, blundered 10th, at most nudged along and held every chance going down the hill to 3 out, shaken up after it, chased Politologue under a ride going to home turn, disputed 2nd turning in, outpaced, brushed 2 out, in 3rd between last 2, hard driven, all out, wandered approaching last, took 2nd starting up the hill, kept on under strong pressure, no impression on winner, looked heavy-legged but stuck to his task. Was punch-drunk up the hill and couldn’t lay a finger on his stablemate. Sadly this is the last we’ve seen of him, as during the second week of April it was reported that he passed away after a heart attack at home during routine exercise.
156

3 Bun Doran
led to 1st, disputed 2nd from 4th, moved comfortably till jumped left 3 out, shaken up, disputed 2nd approaching home turn, outpaced turning in, was 4 lengths 2nd 2 out, hard ridden, wandered and not stay on, lost 2nd last, hard driven, no more, weakened up the hill, got very tired and was being closed on by the 4th last strides. A great pay-day for connections with third place worth £42,440, but it’s unlikely to happen again in 2021.
152

4 Defi Du Seuil
raced 3rd or 4th, raced wide, settled 4th from 5th, niggled along away from 10th and rider lost an iron, dropped to last at the top of the hill and appeared to be struggling, close enough but nudged along approaching 3 out, hard ridden away from it, no impression approaching home turn, looked held in 4th turning in, was 8 lengths behind winner over 2 out, clearly empty between last 2 and more held together than hard ridden, pecked on landing last, was 10 to 12 lengths behind, looked very tired, pushed out last 150 yards when in with a chance of 3rd, not get the place. Whether it was down to the ground or not, or the good gallop at which Politologue went, he didn’t turn up on the day. Let’s see what he’s got for us next season.
152

5 Sceau Royal
held up, slightly slow 5th and niggled along away from it, again niggled away from 10th, close enough starting down the hill to 3 out but going worst of the field, last over 3 out and quickly beaten under a push approaching home turn, detached last turning in and tailing off, trailed in. Despite his going off fourth favourite a bit more than this was expected (remembering that he was going better than Altior with two to jump in the Celebration Chase at Sandown last April), and he’s another who didn’t turn up on the day.

GLENFARCLAS CHASE (A CROSS COUNTRY CHASE)
3m 6f

1 Easysland
tracked leaders, mistake 8th (Timber Rails), chased leader 17th, led 20th, pressed on in front from 25th, some 3 or 4 lengths clear of Tiger Roll from 27th, ridden along from 2 out, 1st 2 clear home turn, stayed on approaching last, ridden clear up the hill, sustained effort to the line, decisive. Only a six year-old, and with this already his second win over this course, you fancy this one could well boss the Cross-Country genre for years to come.
152

2 Tiger Roll
midfield, headway and prominent after 3rd, chased leader from 25th, drew clear of 3rd but struggled to stay with Easysland as winner went clear from 27th, pushed along from 2 out, 1st 2 clear home turn, hard ridden and couldn’t go with winner approaching last, left well behind up the hill. Might have disappointed some, this form lagging last season by a long way, but for me lost nothing in defeat against a new star in this genre.
135

3 Out Sam
held up rear, lost back end on landing 12th (Bank), headway and midfield 18th, lost place and struggling in last trio 25th, tailed off when in close to 2 out, hard ridden, stayed on from home turn and closed on those ahead, went left last, stayed on to take 3rd up the hill, not the remotest impression on 1st 2.
117

4 Diesel D’Allier
held up, headway and midfield 5th, prominent 22nd, outpaced 27th as leaders pressed on, struggling in 4th 2 out, kept on and chance of 3rd approaching last, passed a rival but was overtaken himself up the hill, no more.
114

5 Urgent De Gregaine
gave the others a length in the standing start, held up, mistake 4th, headway and prominent 22nd, tracked leaders when mistake 27th, outpaced as 1st 2 drew clear 3 out, struggling to stay with 1st 2 and some 12 lengths 3rd when jumped left 2 out, tiring when mistake last, weakened and lost places up the hill. This one looked overpriced beforehand – one of the more likely to have been fighting it out for third, and he was arguably the moral third, but couldn’t hold on to the place as he tired in what was a high-quality renewal.
113

6 Outlander
prominent, headway and tracked leaders approaching 20th, ridden and outpaced 26th, well held bend before 2 out, hard driven and no more approaching last, faded up the hill.
112

7 Might Bite
gave the rest a length in the standing start, held up rear, jumped left 3rd, in close to 8th (Timber Rails), niggled along in last trio after 23rd, tailed off and one from last when jumped left 2 out, trailed in.
103

8 Neverushacon
midfield, slightly closer order approaching 4th, prominent 20th, lost place from 23rd as leaders pressed on, struggling in well-held 6th 2 out, ridden and weakened approaching last, tailed off.
99

P Arlequin D’Allier
disputed lead, keen hold, led approaching 4th, slight error 8th (Timber Rails), headed 20th, weakened through field, one from last and tailing off when tired mistake 22nd, pulled up immediately.
0

P Kingswell Theatre
disputed lead early, chased leader approaching 4th, tracked leaders 17th, weakened after 21st, rear and tailing off when pulled up after 23rd.
0

P Sumkindofking
slightly slow away, held up rear, mistake 9th, firmly pushed along and struggling 18th, lost place and tailing off under a ride 20th, mistake 22nd and pulled up immediately.
0

P Josies Orders
prominent to midfield, not fluent 11th, lost place and pushed along in rear 20th, struggling when pulled up after 24th.
0

P Chic Name
midfield to rear, lost place and last one still going when pushed along after 23rd, tailed off 2 out, ridden and tired when pulled up approaching last.
0

U Yanworth
prominent, mistake and unseated rider 19th.

BOODLES JUVENILE HANDICAP HURDLE (REGISTERED AS THE FRED WINTER) (GRADE 3)
2m

1 Aramax
midfield, nudged along before ridden into 5th, nudged along away from it, closer order moving comfortably 3 out, nudged along again, at most a length down 2 out, niggled along after it, drew nearly upsides home turn, shaken up, effort and led approaching last, wandered right, hard driven, picked up well when challenged and whip not used last 125 yards, 1st 2 clear, perhaps a little in hand at the end. This one won with a little bit to spare, finding more when Night Edition turned up on his outer and the jockey only needing hands and heels in the last half furlong.
139

2 Night Edition
held up, had passed a couple when mistake 5th, niggled along after, midfield when mistake 3 out, niggled along, made ground and was at most 3 lengths down 2 out, pushed along, good ground and prominent towards outer home turn, pulled wide approaching last, stayed on well and at most half a length down jumping, hard driven, nearly drew upsides Aramax then no extra as winner found more, 1st 2 clear last 100 yards, stuck to task. After not having the easiest of journeys (like many who do well in this race), had his chance and has run well, whilst suggesting that a longer trip is worth a try; it also serves as a boost for the form of the Grade 2 juvenile on the Festival Trials-card in January (this one was runner-up to Galahad Quest), which looked weak at the time but clearly now a bit better.
133

3 Saint D’oroux
midfield, a little keen, headway and prominent when ridden into 3rd, further ground and with leaders after 5th, chased leader 3 out, disputed lead going comfortably from there to 2 out, not hard ridden immediately after it, shaken up and led home turn, hard ridden approaching last, put under pressure and faded nearing it, was half a length down jumping, hard driven, stuck to task, no impression on 1st 2 who pulled clear but held on to 3rd well. In a race where six of the first seven came from midfield or further back, this one has done much the best of those who raced up with the speed – might do a smidgen better.
130

4 Recent Revelations
midfield, moved largely comfortably some 8 lengths off leaders after 5th, hadn’t made further progress when mistake 3 out, at most nudged along approaching 2 out with many in front, effort delayed and had 6 or 7 in front with 3 lengths to find approaching home turn, made ground, got a split and shaken up approaching last, soon hard ridden, at most a length down when mistake, hard driven, no extra, stuck to task well and just failed to get 3rd. Given the kid-glove treatment till finally shaken up for real 100 yards off the last, he was closing on those ahead when making a crucial error – stretching it to suggest it would have cost him the win, but it definitely cost him third.
129

5 Clemencia
prominent, mistake 3rd and lost place/midfield, had made a little ground when niggled along after 5th, again niggled but held place going to 2 out, hard ridden away from it, was at most 4 lengths down home turn, put under pressure and stayed on approaching last, wandered nearing it, no extra under pressure up the hill, stuck to task and just failed to get 4th, Off the bridle early enough, he kept staying on and would be suited by further.
131

6 Langer Dan
midfield, raced inner, lost ground and rear 4th though still moved comfortably, headway and midfield when not clear run bend after 5th, niggled along and outpaced after 3 out, momentarily steered off inside rail but not clear run and soon back on the rail home turn, ridden and had 10 in front and 6 lengths to find on straightening, put under pressure approaching last, kept on, sustained effort run-in but no extra last 150 yards. Not many come in to this race with a win in a Listed race to their name (the Wensleydale at Wetherby) and his presence in a busy shake-up gives further substance to the form of what looks a strong renewal.
131

7 Theatre Of War
held up rear, niggled after 5th, pulled wide approaching 3 out, moved largely comfortably and closer order approaching 2 out where mistake, shaken up after it, within 3 lengths but caught wide and pushed along home turn, every chance under a ride approaching last, half a length down jumping, no more under pressure after it, faded up the hill, lost ground on those ahead last 175 yards and was being closed on by the 8th final strides, held on grimly to the place. Looked on for a decent finish till rather weakening up the hill and could be a tiny bit better than his position.
126

8 Gealach
midfield, raced outer, in close and propped 1st, niggled along away from 2nd, mistake 3rd and pushed along away from it, had lost a little ground when niggled along away from 5th, very good ground into midfield going down the hill, mistake 3 out,  pushed along, no impression approaching 2 out, hard driven approaching home turn and had 13 in front/7 lengths to find straightening, looked held last, kept on under pressure, good late work and nearly took 7th. Let’s go over further here, this strongly-run two miles wasn’t enough; jumping needs to improve too.
120

9 Tronador
rear, pushed along away from 1st and 2nd, niggled away from 4th, had passed a couple after 5th but still niggled along, not much further progress when blundered 3 out, steered from inner-to-middle towards outer approaching 2 out, made ground, hard ridden approaching home turn, strong effort and closed on leaders approaching last, looked held jumping, no extra up the hill.
123

10 Mick Pastor
midfield, keen and racing with head on one side, not fluent 2nd, nudged along at the top of the hill, closer order going comfortably enough approaching 3 out, continued to move comfortably approaching 2 out, effort delayed approaching home turn, pushed along straightening, carried head to one side and no extra nearing last, faded and lost ground on those ahead final 175 yards. Not much happening in the finish here after he looked like taking a hand over the second last.
134

11 Sacchoandvanzetti
prominent to midfield, keen, midfield when mistake 5th, closer order moving largely comfortably approaching 3 out, niggled along approaching 2 out, hard ridden after it, put under strong pressure approaching last, held place till mistake, soon well held, faded last 150 yards.
120

12 Repetitio
prominent, moved comfortably starting down the hill to 3 out, pushed along briefly after it, held place to 2 out, niggled along approaching home turn, shaken up turning in at most 3 lengths down, hard ridden and faded approaching last, well held jumping, weakened under pressure last 150 yards.
117

13 Bajan Excell
midfield, raced outer, niggled along approaching 2nd, more firmly pushed along away from it, again niggled along between 4th and 5th, struggling to hold place when mistake 3 out, well back 2 out, some 9 lengths down home turn under a strong ride and making little impression, no more after last. Not happening from an early stage.
113

14 Galahad Quest
tracked leaders, not fluent 2nd and 3rd, chased leader 5th, at most a neck down 3 out, disputed lead and at most nudged along approaching 2 out, shaken up after it, hard ridden home turn, was a length down straightening, put under pressure, weakened approaching last, well held jumping, continued to lose ground last 175 yards. Most of those who raced up with the pace dropped away and it was the runner-up here who he beat at Cheltenham last time in what initially looked a weak renewal of the Grade 2 juvenile on the Festival Trials card, so maybe this one is worth another chance.
116

15 Thyme White
midfield, keen, rather pulled his way forward and prominent approaching 4th, mistake 5th, moved comfortably enough 3 out, nudged along approaching 2 out, ridden along after it, weakened under a ride home turn, well back approaching last where mistake, continued to lose ground up the hill. Was too keen from an early stage and empty approaching the last as a result.
113

16 Goa Lil
held up, had dropped to last pair when mistake 5th, niggled away from it, became detached from main body of the field approaching 3 out, niggled along, kept on a bit approaching 2 out, no impression and detached from main body home turn, no more before mistake last, well back, made no contribution.
107

17 Group Stage
held up rear, pushed along away from 2nd, in last trio when niggled away from 5th, losing further ground under a ride and detached last 3 out, no more approaching next, well back last, made no contribution.
106

18 Fraser Island
prominent, mistake 2nd, firmly pushed along after 5th, holding place under a ride when mistake 3 out, hard driven, lost place, rear when mistake 2 out, weakened further under a push and tailed off home turn, was some 175 yards behind the others when mistake last, trailed in.
51

P Palladium
led, hit 1st, took off on the wrong leg 5th, headed and niggled along away from it, more firmly pushed along before lost place and midfield 3 out, lost further ground quickly and in rear when pulled up sharply before 2 out.
0

P Gerolamo Cardano
held up, mistake 3rd and dropped to last, mistake 4th, firmly pushed along at the top of the hill, quickly became tailed off, pulled up before 3 out.
0

P Zoffee
chased leader, hit 1st, ridden into 3rd, led narrowly 5th, ridden into 3 out, pushed along and headed soon after, midfield when rider seemed to accept the situation approaching 2 out, mistake there, briefly pushed along after it, made no ground, dropped rear, eased off and pulled up before last.
0

P Blacko
midfield, raced inner, nudged along after 5th, firmly pushed along approaching 3 out, ridden and weakened approaching 2 out, tailed off last jumping, eased off and pulled up after home turn.

WEATHERBYS CHAMPION BUMPER (A STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE) (GRADE 1)
2m

1 Ferny Hollow
started last and held up at the back, some ground and just about midfield at the top of the hill 5f out, travelled comfortably as started a move 4f out, run blocked, pulled a little wider, niggled along approaching home turn, had 6 in front and 4 lengths to find under a push turning in, stayed on well 2f out, closed on leaders, drew upsides entering final furlong, led 175 yards out, ridden clear, stayed on well to pull clear last 100 yards. Admittedly got a largely charmed passage, but still taking how he put distance between himself and the others at the end, and the future’s good.
121

2 Appreciate It
prominent, moved comfortably some 4 lengths off leaders after 10f, closer order going comfortably 4f out, within a length approaching home turn and arguably moving best, definitely so when led on the bit turning in, shaken up once in line, stayed on under a hand ride, driven entering final furlong, headed 175 yards out, hung left, kept on under pressure, stuck to task and pulled clear of the 3rd, no chance with Ferny Hollow. Those punters who made this one a very strong favourite will have been counting their money turning for home, but he had no answer to the speed of his stablemate, and this lobbing chasing type (on TV pictures at least) could be seen to best advantage over further (half-brother to Pilgrim Way, who’s won over 2m6f, and Danny Kirwan).
119

3 Queens Brook
midfield, started a move and slightly closer order after 10f racing wide, nudged along 4f out, soon more firmly niggled, sustained effort to pass more rivals and chased leader under a push home turn, every chance upsides Appreciate It 300 yards out, put under pressure entering final furlong, couldn’t go with leaders when changed legs 150 yards out, faded late, held on to 3rd with little to spare. Good run, making her move turning for home which might have been a bit early; all the same sure to win her share over hurdles.
108

4 Third Time Lucki
held up in last pair, passed a rival and going largely comfortably but still a lot to do in rear after 10f, started a move 4f out going comfortably and soon in midfield, edged closer still when nudged along 3f out, prominent approaching home turn, within 3 lengths when pushed along turning in, put under pressure 300 yards out, no extra entering final furlong, kept on final 150 yards, took 4th post and was closing on the 3rd, no impression on 1st 2. A blank canvas as far as pedigree is concerned, the way he was keeping on at the end suggests that 2m4f won’t be a problem.
115

5 Eskylane
held up, moved comfortably but a lot to do at the top of the hill 5f out, steered wide and closer order 4f out, nudged along in midfield 3f out, good ground looking stronger than most and tracked leaders home turn, soon pushed along, hung left, put under pressure entering final furlong, no extra, faded, lost 4th post. Out of a mare who won a bumper and showed no other form, this one shaped as though the minimum trip is as far as he wants.
115

6 Ocean Wind
held up, headway and midfield after a mile, pushed along in midfield at the top of the hill 5f out, further ground under a push and at most 5 lengths down 3 1/2 f out, put under pressure home turn, no impression entering final furlong, faded, changed legs 175 yards out, stuck to task without making ground on those ahead last 100 yards. Looking barely pony-height on TV pictures, although this one has the bumper form – not just this but his Newbury-win beforehand – his lack of size might count against him over hurdles.
102

7 Julies Stowaway
held up, some ground and midfield 6f out, pushed along and made good ground wide to be just about prominent 4f out, within a length though not going as well as some 3f out, couldn’t go with leaders under a ride approaching home turn, carried tail high, put under pressure 300 yards out, weakened entering final furlong, no more.
102

8 The Glancing Queen
held up towards rear, pushed along racing widest of all and headway into midfield 5f out, continued to close on leaders going more comfortably and was at most a length behind 4f out, shaken up 3f out, couldn’t go with leaders home turn, faded, well held entering final furlong, weakened further last 150 yards. In what’s surely her final bumper, made her move to join the leaders plenty soon enough and had nothing left for the last furlong.
92

9 Good Time Jonny
held up on inner, was in last trio at the top of the hill 5f out, out of his ground when niggled along starting down the hill, started a move and closed on them but still around 8 to 10 lengths to find 4f out, hard ridden 3f out, made little further progress and looked held in 13th some 10 lengths down home turn, lost ground, no chance when put under pressure entering final furlong, kept on, was closing on the 8th final strides.
98

10 One True King
midfield, a little headway at the top of the hill 5f out, nudged along but going better than some in a prominent-to-midfield position 3f out, soon pushed along, no extra under a ride from home turn, put under pressure 300 yards out, no impression, continued to fade and lost 9th final strides. Ran okay for a long way.
97

11 Five Bar Brian
midfield, keen, closer order and just about prominent at the top of the hill 5f out, moved comfortably as drew closer 4f out, made marked progress to move upsides leaders 3 1/2 f out, pushed along approaching home turn, was disputing 3rd some 3 lengths down on straightening, ridden and weakened 300 yards out, no more under pressure entering final furlong, looked heavy-legged and continued to weaken last 150 yards, tailed off. Having done so much work in the space two furlongs, but with an uphill quarter of a mile still to go, it was no surprise that he dropped away and he’s one to take out of the race.
97

12 Mahler Allstar
prominent, chased leader after 10f, disputed lead 5f out, moved comfortably with leaders till pushed along 3 1/2 f out, held place till lost ground approaching home turn, put under pressure, turned for home in 10th some 6 lengths down, continued to lose ground and looked heavy-legged entering final furlong, no more.
93

13 Ask A Honey Bee
tracked leaders, shuffled back but remained prominent as niggled along after 10f, ridden and lost place 5f out, in rear 3 1/2 f out, put under pressure 300 yards out, no impression, weakened and looked heavy-legged last 100 yards.
84

14 Can You Call
prominent, lost place after 9f and midfield, niggled along and struggling after 10f, looked held towards rear 4f out, steered wide, no headway approaching home turn, put under pressure, no more final furlong, looked heavy-legged last 100 yards, tailed off.
82

15 Darling Daughter
took a bit of stoking up to make a start, tracked leaders, chased leader after 3 1/2 f, shuffled back but remained prominent after 10f, niggled along at the top of the hill, firmly shaken up 3f out, lost place approaching home turn and midfield to rear turning in, continued to weaken final 300 yards, tailed off.
74

16 Adrimel
prominent, tracked leaders after 10f, disputed lead 5f out, niggled along 4f out, held place till firmly pushed along 3f out, started to fade approaching home turn, still within 6 lengths straightening, put under pressure, weakened 300 yards out, dropped through field, eased off final 100 yards, tailed off.
81

17 Israel Champ
led, niggled along 5f out, headed, firmly pushed along 4f out, put under pressure 3f out and continued to drop back through field, tailed off 300 yards out, continued to lose ground and places last 100 yards.
80

18 Panic Attack
midfield, moved comfortably enough 5f out, niggled along 4f out, soon more firmly pushed along, weakened approaching home turn, well held 300 yards out, continued to drop back final 150 yards, tailed off.
65

19 Audacity
prominent, niggled along after 3f, raced lazily, lost ground and prominent to midfield after 7f, continued to lose place and midfield after 9f, still ridden along and dropped rear at the top of the hill, well held in rear and tailed off 4f out, hopeless approaching home turn, kept on straight and picked off tiring ones inside final 150 yards. Took little interest.
72

20 Let Me Entertain U
midfield, nudged along after 2f, lost place, last and pushed along after 9f, reminders soon after, kept on a bit 4f out, lost ground again and detached from main body of the field 3f out under a ride, tailed off home turn, kept on, closed on those ahead last 150 yards and picked off tired rivals very late, made no contribution.
72

21 Brief Ambition
midfield, headway after 9f, prominent at the top of the hill 5f out, pushed along 3 1/2 f out and struggled to hold place, dropped through field and rear home turn, continued to weaken and looked heavy-legged close home, tailed off.
79

22 Linelee King
midfield, lost ground and niggled along in midfield to rear after 9f, more firmly pushed along 4f out, weakened under a ride 3 1/2 f out and soon rear, continued to weaken final 300 yards, tailed off, lost 21st place on the post.
79

23 Snowpiercer
held up, pushed along and struggling after 9f, lost place and dropped to detached last/tailing off 5f out, continued to weaken, trailed in around half a furlong behind the ones in front. If this was a prep-run for the Newmarket Town Plate, then mission accomplished.

Day Three, Thursday March 12th

MARSH NOVICES´ CHASE (GRADE 1) (REGISTERED AS THE GOLDEN MILLER)
2m 4f

1 Samcro
prominent, a little ground and tracked leaders 13th, moved comfortably, drew upsides Melon up front 3 out, led going best approaching 2 out, mistake, headed, hard driven, drew upsides last, led early on run-in, hard driven, went left under pressure, stayed on well in narrow lead, was joined and possibly headed inside final 50 yards, only just led post. Melon’s rump was in front on the line, but that’s not what they pay out on, and crucially Samcro’s nose was the first to get there; in terms of the performance, this was the Samcro of old until the mistake at the second last, then he seemed to be finding plenty for the first two thirds of the run-in, then he found nothing and allowed Melon to come back at him in the final 75 yards. The conclusion is I’m not convinced, and in the likes of the John Durkan which are sure to be pre-January targets, I’d rather take him on.
147

2 Melon
prominent, led 5th, jumped soundly, still moved comfortably in front when joined by Samcro 3 out, niggled along and headed approaching 2 out, the better jump, hard ridden, led approaching last, steadied into it, was joined and headed soon after, hard driven, stayed on well, came back at Samcro final 75 yards, possibly led very narrowly under pressure, only just headed post. In a fine finish, it’s a shame they don’t pay on whose backside gets there first, because it was quite clearly Melon’s – indeed the only part of Melon that wasn’t in front of Samcro at the line was his nose. In terms of the performance he’s shown unforeseen reserves of stamina to prove himself at 2m4f, so this opens up options; the flip side is his lack of consistency – this time it was clear from an early stage that he was ‘on it’, but we’ve known for a while that he’s not always on such good terms. so watching brief to start with next season.
147

3 Faugheen
led, headed 5th, chased leader after, moving comfortably when pecked on landing 3 out, tucked in behind leaders approaching home turn, niggled along, stayed on approaching 2 out, hard ridden, switched inner approaching last, a length and a half down jumping, put under pressure, no extra run-in till started to close inside final 100 yards, closing at the post but never getting there. Everything that could be said about this performance, and indeed his season, has been said already and no need to add anything here, except that if he were mine and I was keeping him in training I’d go over three miles with him next season.
146

4 Mister Fisher
prominent to midfield early, raced inner, mistake 5th, lost ground and rear 8th though still moved largely comfortably, mistake 9th, niggled along 3 out with 7 in front and 6 lengths to find, switched off inner and closed a little home turn, niggled along, stayed on and closed on leaders approaching 2 out, hard ridden, kept on one pace before steadied into last, in close, looked held run-in, driven, stayed on and was closing final 125 yards, finished well. Good run but could have done with being positioned closer to the pace – this one tends to spend the second half of his races off the bridle and it wasn’t one of Nico de Boinville’s best rides.
143

5 Tornado Flyer
midfield to rear, dropped last and niggled along away from 3rd, niggled again after 10th, niggled along and struggling in rear of main group after 13th, in close to 3 out, hard ridden away from it, stayed on and closed on them approaching home turn, a lot to do turning in but closed on leaders a little before steadied into 2 out, put under pressure, picked up a bit approaching last, driven, stayed on into 5th final 175 yards, nearest finish. Raced lazily.
138

6 Midnight Shadow
midfield to rear, a little ground and midfield approaching 7th, headway and prominent to midfield approaching 13th, niggled along 3 out, effort and moved within half a length of leaders approaching home turn, hard ridden, no extra approaching 2 out, faded, looked held between last 2, was 8 lengths 5th over last, stuck to task but lost 5th 175 yards out, no more. Probably ran to his best, serving it up to them approaching the bend but unable to find more after the second last.
137

7 Saint Sonnet
midfield, dropped rear by 6th, headway and midfield 9th, mistake 11th and lost place/rear, niggled along approaching 12th, headway going better and at most 3 lengths down 3 out, pushed along after it, moved largely comfortably turning in then shaken up approaching 2 out, not fluent there, faded, put under pressure, looked held but stuck to task approaching last, pecked on landing, no more up the hill. Might have bettered his position by a few lengths but for the mistake at the top of the hill and has done enough to suggest he’ll be interesting in 2020/21.
133

8 Bapaume
held up, made ground and midfield approaching 7th, in close to 9th, mistake 10th and lost ground, made up the ground and went well enough at most 4 lengths down approaching 3 out, shaken up after it, just about in touch with leaders home turn, faded approaching 2 out, ridden and didn’t appear to be striding out well between last 2, well held when in close to last, weakened, eased off last 100 yards.
122

9 Annie Mc
niggled along in rear after 1st and again after 6th and 11th, blundered 13th and lost place, still just about in touch when pushed along and outpaced approaching home turn, kept on a bit under pressure, till weakened approaching 2 out, stride shortened and dropped right away between last 2, tailed off.
75

10 Poker Play
chased leader, a bit slow 1st, ridden into 5th, lost place final circuit and midfield/niggled along after 8th, mistake 9th and dropped rear, mistake 10th and started to tail off in detached last, hopeless home turn, went left 2 out and last, trailed in.
66

P Reserve Tank
niggled along to make a start, tracked leaders, not fluent 1st, a little keen, not fluent 8th, a bit slow 11th and started to lose place, pushed along approaching 13th, hard ridden and beaten after 3 out, dropped away, in rear and reminders approaching home turn, weakened markedly and tailed off when pulled up before 2 out, eased down to a walk.
0

U Itchy Feet
rear, ridden into 1st, niggled along away from 2nd, mistake 4th, blundered and unseated rider 6th, continued riderless, mistake 8th when loose. There were a few mistakes in his round when he won the Scilly Isles at Sandown and he needs to do something about his jumping in 2020/21, but to be fair this was only his third steeplechase.

PERTEMPS NETWORK FINAL HANDICAP HURDLE (GRADE 3)
3m

1 Sire Du Berlais
midfield, niggled along away from 4th, firmly ridden along away from 8th, in close to 9th and ridden again, headway going better approaching 2 out, ridden into it, very good headway approaching home turn, soon every chance tracking leaders, got a split and shaken up 175 yards off last, half a length down jumping, hard driven, found extra to lead inside final furlong, 1st 2 clear, stayed on well  last 125 yards. Till the same time next year then, for the hattrick…
152

2 The Storyteller
midfield, mistake 2nd, travelled comfortably throughout, closer order going down the hill to 2 out where mistake, not clear run home turn, pulled wide 200 yards off last, pushed along to lead nearing it, hard driven, stayed on well, headed 175 yards out, 1st 2 clear, sustained effort but no extra final strides. Well treated over hurdles, two years after he won the Stable Plate on this card, only his trained-to-the-second stablemate finished ahead of him.
149

3 Tout Est Permis
midfield, mistakes 7th and 9th, moved largely comfortably till niggled along approaching 2 out, ended up wide, pushed along approaching home turn, good headway to get into contention, sustained effort under a ride to dispute lead 175 yards off last, led nearing it but soon headed, hard driven and outpaced up the hill, kept on but no further impression as 1st 2 drew clear, stuck to task. Good run, but nothing he could do about the Elliott-runners.
122

4 Third Wind
held up rear, mistake 2nd and niggled along away from it, again niggled away from 3rd, still niggled and started to make places 10th, just about midfield but a bit to do when mistake 2 out, pushed along approaching home turn, picked up very well and passed several, closed on leaders a furlong off last, pulled wide, put under pressure nearing last, outpaced up the hill, driven, kept on, no impression on 3rd, was closed on by the 5th but held on to the place. We need a four-mile hurdle race here I think, drying ground counting against him on the day.
132

5 Relegate
held up, niggled along away from 6th, slightly detached from main body of the field when mistake 10th, niggled along again, had made little of any ground when lugged left going down the hill to 2 out, had picked off beaten ones but still in a poor position under a ride approaching home turn, was 16th with 12 lengths to find on straightening, pulled wide 250 yards off last and stayed on, closed on leaders wide nearing it, hard driven, stayed on up the hill, closed on the 4th last 100 yards but not quite get the place. This one’s run-style is pretty much set in stone: take no interest, then run on in the last three furlongs and pick up the pieces – unless there’s a dramatic change in his attitude, this one is an automatic leave when he runs.
128

6 Kansas City Chief
tracked leaders, led approaching 4th, reached for 7th, at most nudged along as disputed lead 2 out, headed, at most nudged along approaching home turn, shaken up straightening, stayed on and still every chance till faded 175 yards off last, looked held jumping, driven, no more, carried tail high, stuck to task. Ended up serving as a pacemaker.
117

7 Rapper
prominent to midfield, closer order final circuit, moved upsides leaders after 10th, disputed lead 2 out, niggled along and led approaching home turn, soon more firmly pushed along, was closed on, headed 175 yards off last, faded, looked held last, ridden, kept on, no further impression.
119

8 Jatiluwih
held up, headway and midfield when mistake 7th and ridden away from it, pushed along at the top of the hill, little headway approaching 2 out, pushed along away from it, well back home turn, kept on without making an impression approaching last, mistake, kept on and passed beaten ones, going on well at the post but made little contribution.
124

9 Stoney Mountain
midfield, mistake 8th, started a move and closer order at the top of the hill, niggled along approaching 2 out, pushed along away from it, reminders home turn, kept on without making an impression till picked up a bit some 175 yards off last, jumped it in 15 lengths 10th, no more last 150 yards. Only the one mistake which is commendable for this one, but made little contribution in this deeper handicap than the Haydock one he won back in November.
121

10 Fred The Foot
midfield, in close to 4th, niggled after 10th, a little headway wide at the top of the hill, closer order still and prominent when overjumped and pecked on landing 2 out, hard ridden, disputed 4th some 4 lengths down home turn, sustained effort under pressure and chased leader 250 yards off last, faded soon after, weakening and looked held when mistake last, looked heavy-legged, lost further ground and positions last 150 yards.
113

11 Sunset Showdown
midfield, in close to 9th, slightly closer order at the top of the hill, further headway travelling comfortably and prominent 2 out, pushed along away from it, travelled more strongly than some of those around him as tracked leaders on straightening, pushed along some 200 yards off last, faded under a ride, well held as jumped last some 12 lengths behind leaders, carried tail high and wandered under pressure, no more up the hill, weakened. Perhaps produced soon enough, this looked as though it would be better than it ended up turning for home.
110

12 Royal Thief
chased leader, not fluent 5th and nudged along away from it, with leaders towards outer when mistake 7th, chased leader when mistake 9th and pushed along away from it, held place under a push, disputed lead 2 out, hard ridden, headed, driven and started to weaken home turn, well held under pressure some 200 yards off last, continued to lose ground up the hill.
104

13 A Great View
midfield, mistake 2nd, ridden along away from 9th, hard ridden and lost place/dropping rear after 10th, weakened and detached from main group under a ride after 2 out, well held but kept on a little approaching last, no impression run-in, eased last few strides.
115

14 Kilbricken Storm
prominent, took off too early 8th, niggled along after 10th, held place to 2 out, pushed along away from it, put under pressure approaching home turn, couldn’t find more, faded approaching last, weakened further after it, tailed off.
111

15 Skandiburg
held up, steadied into and mistake 3rd, pushed along away from it, rear when hard ridden away from 7th, pushed along again 10th, lost place and detached from main group under a ride after mistake 2 out, kept on though well held approaching last, passed a beaten one before mistake, no more run-in, made no contribution.
110

16 Unowhatimeanharry
tracked leaders, pushed along away from 9th, niggled along and started to lose place after 10th, prominent to midfield when in close to 2 out, struggling to hold place when driven home turn, no more and weakened approaching last, some 18 to 20 lengths behind jumping, continued to lose ground up the hill. At the age of 12, enough’s enough on this evidence.
120

17 Guitar Pete
held up, in last 4 when pushed along away from 3rd, ridden along 6th, going much the worst of the field starting final circuit, struggling in rear when hard ridden and reminder away from 10th, detached from main group under a ride after 2 out, tailed off when hampered some 200 yards off last, no more.
104

18 Welsh Saint
midfield, mistake 3rd, headway and prominent after 4th, mistake 8th, niggled along at the top of the hill, pushed along approaching 2 out, lost place and midfield under pressure home turn, weakened on long run to last, tailed off when mistake, no more.
106

19 Dream Berry
held up, mistake 8th, niggled along and made a place or two after 10th, rear of main group when ridden along after 2 out, carried head high, couldn’t find more under pressure home turn, weakened approaching last, tailed off.
105

20 Doubly Clever
midfield to rear, had dropped rear when mistake 6th and niggled along away from it, niggled again away from 10th, lost place and detached from main group under a ride after 2 out, tailing off when hung left 200 yards off last, weakened, trailed in.
79

P Burrows Park
led, mistake 3rd, headed approaching 4th, chased leader when mistake 6th, blundered 8th, mistake 9th, losing place when not fluent 10th, dropped back through field, in rear approaching 2 out, soon in last pair, weakened further, tailed off when eased down and pulled up some 100 yards before last.
0

P Copper Gone West
prominent throughout, ridden after 2 out, staying on till broke down approaching home turn and pulled up. Sadly she had to be put down.
0

P Rocket Lad
dropped out in a detached last, niggled along approaching 7th, hard ridden away from it, beginning to get further adrift when mistake 10th, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

U Dingo Dollar
midfield, nudged along away from 5th, ridden into 7th, pushed along and lost place approaching 10th, weakened through field and in last pair/tailing off after 2 out, hopeless and trailing in when unseated rider on the flat in the straight.

RYANAIR CHASE (REGISTERED AS THE FESTIVAL TROPHY) (GRADE 1)
2m 5f

1 Min
chased leader, led narrowly 7th, moved comfortably still in narrow lead approaching 3 out, travelled best off home turn, pushed along after 2 out, stayed on in a length lead, wandered a little before the better jump last, hard driven, idled in front, stayed on well enough under pressure, was closed on last 125 yards but always holding on. Possibly a few lbs behind his best, but this level of form sufficed with A Plus Tard and Frodon running below expectations.
162

2 Saint Calvados
midfield to rear, closer order approaching 14th, good ground going comfortably and prominent 3 out, tracked leaders on inner home turn, pushed along approaching 2 out with 2 lengths to find, effort between last 2 and stayed on well to be at most a length down approaching last, every chance when mistake, hard driven, switched to challenge on Min’s outer final 175 yards, stayed on well under pressure, was closing on Min final 125 yards but never quite getting there. It’s possible that, had the ground been more testing, the first two here would have finished the other way round, but at least Saint Calvados showed that he belongs in this company and has earned a tilt at the 2021 renewal.
162

3 A Plus Tard
midfield, a bit slow 12th, improved position slightly but niggled along approaching 14th, good ground as produced to challenge approaching 3 out, niggled along, drew upsides Min approaching 2 out, wandered a little, hard ridden and couldn’t go with 1st 2 approaching last, steadied into it, ridden and one pace starting up the hill, stayed on under pressure final 150 yards, ears back, closed a little but made no real impression. Having been touted, justifiably, as a Queen Mother Champion Chase possible, remembering how he mullered the field in the novices’ handicap in 2019 this was a little disappointing, his coming off the bit at the top of the hill a worrying sign. Let’s see what he’s got for us next season.
160

4 Frodon
sent on, headed 6th, lost place and midfield 7th, improved position and prominent from 13th, niggled along approaching 3 out, hard ridden and outpaced approaching home turn, lost ground on those ahead approaching 2 out under a ride, well held approaching last, weakened up the hill and was being closed on by the 5th last 150 yards. With the going less testing and arguably a deeper field for this renewal, wasn’t going near repeating his 2019 success from a circuit out when he first lost his place.
147

5 Duc Des Genievres
held up, not fluent 5th, headway and just about midfield travelling comfortably approaching 14th, not shaken up approaching 3 out where not fluent, pushed along away from it, made ground and had half a chance home turn, faded approaching 2 out, lost further ground and well held approaching last under a ride, was closing on the weakening 4th last 150 yards but no impression on those ahead.
147

6 Shattered Love
tracked leaders, chased leader 6th, moved upsides and every chance nudged along approaching 3 out, ridden into it, hard ridden to hold place approaching home turn, put under pressure, weakened quickly straightening, well held and losing ground under a ride before and after 2 out, mistake last, eased off.
131

7 Aso
prominent, caught wide bend before 4th, led narrowly 6th to 7th, tracked leaders after, not fluent 8th, niggled along from 9th, lost place and pushed along in midfield 12th, dropped to last 13th, became detached next, weakened further and tailed off from 2 out, trailed in.
103

F Riders Onthe Storm
held up, not fluent 4th, switched wide approaching 8th, mistake 10th and niggled along away from it, briefly more firmly pushed along after 11th, passed a rival 13th and still in touch, keeping on when fell 3 out. Not beaten at the time but had been off the bit for a while, so probably wouldn’t have been in the shake-up.

PADDY POWER STAYERS´ HURDLE (GRADE 1)
3m

1 Lisnagar Oscar
midfield, in close to 2nd and nudged along away from it, closer order and prominent in chasing group 10th, at most nudged along and closed on leaders going better than most on downhill run to 2 out, pushed along and took 2nd approaching home turn, led soon after the turn, stayed on, opened up a 2-length lead 175 yards off last, put under pressure nearing it as Ronald Pump closed on him, in close but the better jump, driven out, stayed on well to pull clear last 175 yards. Next season I’ll be looking out for whoever finishes third in the novices’ chase at Stratford at the end of October/beginning of November, and paying more attention if they are beaten 30 lengths or more (33 lengths behind Black Op to be precise in this case).
159

2 Ronald Pump
held up in last trio, not fluent 6th, mistake 7th and pushed along away from it, started a move 8th, midfield 9th, continued progress to close on leaders at the top of the hill, at most niggled along within 4 lengths of leaders when unsighted and mistake 2 out, pushed along, further ground to track leaders only a length down home turn, effort delayed as squeezed between horses and not clear run 200 yards off last, shaken up, switched, stayed on and closed on Lisnagar Oscar nearing last, half a chance when mistake and slight stumble, hard driven, sustained effort, pulled clear of 3rd but couldn’t reach winner final 150 yards. If this one hadn’t appeared on your radar before this race, not only will he be on it now but – now that Paisley Park is no longer invincible – he’ll be on the shortlist for next year’s Stayers’, as his profile coming in to this was progressive in general, and with this massive step up, surely that means no more handicaps.
157

3 Bacardys
held up in last trio, nudged along 4th, started a move and passed a couple 10th, raced wide and going better than most but plenty to do in rear of main group approaching 2 out, not shaken up in earnest as approached home turn with 10 in front and 6 lengths to make up, niggled along, very good ground wide to pass several some 200 yards off last and chase winner 2 lengths down, finally hard ridden nearing last, couldn’t find extra when steadied into it and went left, hard driven, all out, kept on well enough to hold 3rd with nothing to spare. Had his chance despite Mr Patrick Mullins overdoing the waiting ride – it’s becoming the norm with the rider – but had two resolute rivals in front.
154

4 Emitom
midfield, niggled along approaching 6th, closer order when mistake 9th, niggled again and struggling to hold place at the top of the hill, pushed along on inner and stayed on before mistake 2 out, put under pressure, got a split home turn and within 3 lengths of leaders under a ride straightening, hard driven and stayed on 150 yards off last, couldn’t find extra nearing it, went left under pressure early on run-in, just kept on. Hard work for the jockey, but posts a career-best.
153

5 Summerville Boy
prominent, mistake 7th, tracked the 2nd going comfortably till disputed the place as field closed on clear leader going downhill to 2 out, every chance when mistake there, tracked leaders and pushed along home turn, not asked for maximum effort 200 yards off last, put under pressure nearing it and couldn’t go with leaders, jumped it in 4th, driven and relegated to 5th run-in, no more, kept on last 100 yards. This was a more truly-run race than the Cleeve in January in which he ran 2nd to Paisley Park and he didn’t quite stay the trip.
153

6 Tobefair
prominent to midfield first circuit, midfield when niggled along after 8th, lost place after 10th and vigorously ridden along at the top of the hill, a bit to do under a ride approaching 2 out, not clear run approaching home turn, hard ridden, was bumped some 175 yards off last, put under pressure, carried head to one side and couldn’t go with leaders nearing last, well held run-in, driven and no more last 125 yards, weakened final strides.
151

7 Paisley Park
midfield, slightly closer order and just about prominent in chasing group approaching 7th, some 2 to 3 lengths off the 2nd when pushed along at the top of the hill, hard ridden some 3 lengths down till steadied into and mistake 2 out, driven and stayed on coming off home turn, was 3 lengths down some 250 yards off last, struggling to pick up under pressure when bumped 2 or 3 times, no extra nearing last, weakened up the hill, got tired and heavy-legged, could barely make it to the line. As you were – we don’t have a new Big Buck’s after all – but he weakened so markedly on the run-in that something must have gone pretty badly amiss, and as already been recorded he had a heart issue.
145

8 Apple’s Jade
led, clear 3rd, went 6 lengths clear after 4th and was the thick end of 15 lengths clear after 6th, pressed on 10th and was about the same distance in front at the top of the hill, the rest closed up and only 2 lengths ahead approaching 2 out, pushed along, stayed on till headed coming off home turn, weakened and was bumped approaching last, left alone a few strides off it and jumped tired, no more. So ends a great career, and her first port of call post-racing is reportedly a date with Walk In The Park, sire of Douvan, Min and Walk In The Mill.
135

9 The Jam Man
held up, in last pair when pushed along away from 6th, hard ridden and struggling to hold place after 10th, detached from the main body 2 out, turned for home some 15 lengths off leader, picked off beaten ones before weakened approaching last, mistake, continued to lose ground, tailed off.
124

10 Ask Dillon
tracked leaders, niggled along approaching 3rd, disputed 2nd 5th, in close to 6th, chased clear leader from there, ridden into 7th, hard ridden going down the hill to 2 out, losing place when blundered, hard driven, looked held home turn, weakened before last, mistake, looked punch-drunk run-in, tailed off.
123

P West Approach
midfield, ridden along 8th, lost place and rear 10th, continued to weaken and tailed off 2 out, made no ground approaching home turn under a ride, eased off and pulled up before last.
0

P L’Ami Serge
held up, niggled along after 9th, stayed in touch in rear of main group and travelled better approaching 2 out, pushed along approaching home turn, made no ground, weakened under pressure some 250 yards off last and dropped away quickly, tailing off when pulled up before last, soon eased to a walk.
0

P City Island
midfield, lost place after 6th, made a little ground under a ride at the top of the hill, just about stayed in touch in rear of main group approaching 2 out, made further ground to turn for home in 7th some 5 lengths down, put under pressure, no extra, weakened approaching last, soon well held, eased and pulled up some 75 yards before last. A better run than being pulled up would suggest given where he was turning for home, but was off the bit halfway and might well have headgear the next time he runs.
0

P Donna’s Diamond
chased leader, in close to 2nd, disputed 2nd 5th, mistake 6th, hard ridden and struggling to hold place starting final circuit, lost place and ridden towards rear 9th, became detached last 10th, continued to lose ground and well tailed off 2 out, pulled up before last.
0

P Penhill
held up last, mistake 3rd and became detached, pulled up immediately.

BROWN ADVISORY & MERRIEBELLE STABLE PLATE HANDICAP CHASE (GRADE 3)
2m 5f

1 Simply The Betts
chased leader, in close to 7th, ridden into 10th, shuffled back a little but still close up when in close to 13th and niggled away from it, made ground 3 out, niggled along and chased leader home turn, hard ridden approaching 2 out, left in front there, hard ridden and not going as well as Happy Diva between last 2, upsides when steadied into and hit last, headed, hard driven, stayed on well to lead 150 yards out, sustained effort and pulling clear at the line. Genuine effort, and all the more commendable given he was up with the pace the whole way.
155

2 Happy Diva
midfield, headway and prominent 10th, travelled comfortably, tracked leaders after 3 out, niggled along approaching home turn, produced to challenge and travelled best approaching 2 out, pushed along between last 2, stayed on, the better jump last and led, hard driven, headed 150 yards out, no extra, stuck to task. Yet another fine effort, and who’s to say there won’t be more of the same next season if she stays in training, despite a handicap mark that will be at best staying at the 149 she ran off here.
151

3 Mister Whitaker
midfield, blundered 1st, closer order going comfortably and at most 6 lengths down 14th, reminder after 3 out, niggled along and kept on approaching home turn, soon more firmly pushed, left in 3rd 2 out, ridden and no extra approaching last, put under pressure, one pace, picked up when challenged for 3rd inside final 125 yards, no impression on 1st 2. This time next year he’ll still be the right side of ten and, on this evidence, could easily be a challenger again; he’s also worth another chance at three miles (outclassed behind Santini when pulled up on the Festival Trials-card in January).
155

4 Oldgrangewood
held up, started a move travelling comfortably 14th and closing in midfield approaching 3 out, niggled along approaching home turn, disputed 9th and had 7 lengths to find turning in, niggled along, left in 5th when put under pressure after 2 out, kept on, looked held last, picked up under pressure in last 150 yards to close on 3rd, stuck to task to the line but didn’t get the place, nearest finish. After a waiting ride came off worst in the battle for 3rd, but did nothing wrong under pressure; the leaders didn’t come back though, the first three well ahead of him throughout the race.
150

5 Ben Dundee
midfield, hampered 10th, travelled comfortably and made a little ground before 14th, edging closer when briefly shaken up after 3 out, seemed poised in rear of leading group approaching home turn, at most niggled along as edged closer approaching 2 out, hampered and left 4th, hard ridden, no impression before jumped big last, no more run-in, didn’t really stay on and only just held 5th. The jockey was at pains to hold on to him before the second last and he didn’t really put it in up the hill.
148

6 Spiritofthegames
held up last, niggled along after 1st, mistakes 2nd and 3rd, niggled again after 6th, had made a couple of places but still towards rear when niggled along after 12th, made ground and just about midfield under a push 3 out, pushed along and kept on without making any ground from there till steadied into and went left 2 out, ridden and no impression going to last, closed on leaders a little final 175 yards, just failed to get 5th. After a horrible passage early on, this was probably the best that he could have done.
149

7 Louis’ Vac Pouch
midfield, keen, started a move 14th, closed on leaders going down the hill to 3 out where in close, pushed along, bumped rival approaching home turn, made a little ground before brushed 2 out then hampered, put under pressure, no impression when blundered last, kept on run-in, passed a beaten one inside last 175 yards, no more. A flatter-track, smaller-field 2m4f handicap chase will always suit this one better than the likes of this and he’s exceeded expectations.
139

8 Livelovelaugh
prominent to midfield, headway and prominent when badly hampered 10th, niggled along in midfield approaching 11th, edged closer before 14th, not asked for a big effort before 3 out, niggled along after, some 5 or 6 lengths down when pushed along off home turn, couldn’t find more from 2 out, just about in contention for a place last under a ride, hard driven run-in, faded, lost 7th close home, no more.
137

9 Springtown Lake
prominent, mistake 9th (water) and shuffled back to midfield, niggled along after 10th, mistake 14th, lost place and midfield to rear approaching home turn, pushed along, kept on before 2 out though looked held, was hampered there, pushed along and made no ground before last, pushed again throughout run-in, stuck to task, no impression.
134

10 Death Duty
midfield, headway and just about prominent 10th, slow 11th, headway and tracked leaders 14th, travelled comfortably approaching 3 out, niggled along home turn, within 3 lengths disputing 4th straightening, no extra under a push before 2 out, slightly hampered, put under pressure, faded approaching last, driven again run-in, continued to lose ground, was being closed on by the next one at the post.
135

11 Snow Falcon
midfield, raced wide final circuit, mistakes 12th and 13th, towards rear 14th, pushed along, kept on before and after 3 out under a push, midfield and was closing on those ahead home turn, put under pressure and continued to close approaching 2 out, no extra between last 2, faded, closed on the one in front final strides but well held.
140

12 Robin Des Foret
held up last trio, hampered 8th, detached last 10th, still last but no longer detached and travelled comfortably 14th, niggled along from 3 out and picked off a few stragglers approaching home turn though still towards rear, pushed along and kept on approaching 2 out, was hampered, left alone approaching last and completed in own time. This couldn’t have gone much more wrong, and when he had to jump two fallen horses at the second last, that was the last straw. This one is a hold-up bridle-horse, but you can put a line through this performance.
132

13 Vision Des Flos
midfield, lost ground and midfield to rear 3 out, well back when jumped left 2 out, niggled along briefly between last 2, no more after last.
128

14 Kauto Riko
held up last trio, mistake 9th (water), had made no ground when pushed along 12th, continually pushed but still no headway 3 out, well held in rear 2 out, made no contribution.
128

15 Blazer
midfield, mistake 8th and badly hampered, not fluent 9th and niggled along away from it, mistake 11th, struggling when mistake 14th, largely left alone from home turn, in rear 2 out, no more.
122

16 Highway One O One
prominent, headway to chase leader approaching 13th, mistake 14th, held place till in close to 3 out and lost place quickly under a ride, midfield and dropping away home turn, well held when hampered 2 out, rear last, weakened run-in, tailed off.
117

17 Deyrann De Carjac
midfield, blundered 5th, made a little ground before mistake 12th, blundered 14th and lost place, in rear approaching home turn, hampered 2 out, no more, was last over last, weakened, tailed off. This one lacks size and this tough contest proved too much for him.
108

F Royal Village
midfield to rear, raced outer, mistake 3rd, closer order when fell 8th.
0

F Imperial Presence
tracked leaders, shuffled back a little and niggled along from 9th, made a little ground when ridden into 11th, in 1st 4 when vigorously pushed along after 3 out, held place to home turn, hard ridden and starting to fade when fell 2 out. Probably would have finished somewhere in the ruck, about 20 lengths off the winner.
[131]

F Siruh Du Lac
led, not fluent 5th, pushed along in at most a length lead 3 out, ridden, staying on and was joined up front after home turn, every chance when fell heavily 2 out. Off a 9-lbs higher mark than when successful in this a year ago, he was strongly challenged but staying on when falling – doing enough to suggest that he’d have at least placed, probably upsides Mister Whitaker disputing third.
[150]

P Not Another Muddle
held up, blundered 2nd, hampered 8th, mistake 10th, just about held place to 3 out, pushed along in rear after it, weakened, tailed off when tired jump 2 out, pulled up before last. An early blunder set the tone here.
0

P Charmant
midfield, mistake 2nd, taken back a little and held up from 4th, raced wide from 8th, headway and midfield, gradually lost place and in last pair 14th, weakened and detached last when mistake 3 out, weakened further, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

U La Bague Au Roi
prominent, headway and tracked leaders 9th, ridden into and blundered/unseated rider 10th. In her first Cheltenham steeplechase, presented with the first open ditch, the question that Richard Johnson was asking of her proved too much; she was doing okay at the time and is worth another chance.

DAYLESFORD MARES´ NOVICES´ HURDLE (GRADE 2) (REGISTERED AS THE DAWN RUN)
2m 1f

1 Concertista
midfield, starting a move going comfortably when mistake 6th, effort delayed and had plenty in front approaching 2 out, niggled along after, was within 6 lengths with 9 still in front home turn, very good and quick ground scything between rivals to track leaders some 200 yards off last, challenged going best nearing it, soon led and was 3 lengths in front jumping, ridden and ran on strongly to pull well clear up the hill, impressive. So… using my guesstimate of how far behind she was turning for home added to the official winning distance of 12 lengths, that is at least 18 lengths that she’s made up in the last quarter of a mile; and given that two of the mares she finished ahead of in this race last year – three if you count the one that finished ninth – turned out to be not too shabby, there’s surely only one race she can go for this time in 2021, and I’ll be disappointed if that ends up being the Coral Cup.
143

2 Dolcita
midfield, mistake 2nd, closer order 6th, prominent to midfield going comfortably when mistake 2 out, pushed along and switched away from inner approaching home turn, pushed along again and headway wide to lead approaching last but immediately headed by Concertista, already looking held when mistake last, well outpaced run-in, ridden out and came clear of the 3rd, no chance with winner. Has run into a potential top-notcher here and no disgrace; that said she needs to improve her jumping.
131

3 Rayna’s World
held up, not fluent 1st, not fluent 3rd and lost ground, last and niggled along approaching 4th, in last pair when pushed along after 5th, ridden along whilst still last at the top of the hill, still detached from main body of the field approaching 2 out, began to pick up approaching home turn though still a great deal to do, put under pressure, stayed on, threaded a path and picked off several rivals from home turn to last, jumped it in 6th some 15 lengths down, driven and ran on, passed more rivals to go 3rd last 150 yards, no impression on the 2nd let alone the winner, nearest finish. This one’s very fast finish was picked up on at the time, but my take on it is ‘watching brief’ – she wasn’t on the bridle at any point of the race, and this could well be just the sort to start favourite and finish second or third on her next five runs.
128

4 Yukon Lil
held up, started a move after 6th racing wide, headway and midfield at the top of the hill, further good ground going comfortably and prominent 2 out, closed up on the bit and bumped rival approaching home turn, badly hampered turning in, stumbled and lost a length, hard ridden, switched wide, one pace approaching last, unable to go with 1st 2 when steadied into last, hard ridden, stayed on, good late work to pass a couple and take 4th last strides, no chance with those ahead. After she got no run on the home turn she lacked the pace to go with her stablemates and was held at the last, but she then did good work in the last 150 yards to take 4th close home and should go over further on this evidence.
126

5 Colreevy
led till headed approaching 2nd, chased leader after, moved comfortably and was still well placed when wandered a fraction before in close to 2 out, tracked leaders to home turn, soon pushed along, stayed on and every chance approaching last, outpaced nearing it and held jumping, ridden, kept on till faded last 125 yards and lost ground and places close home.
126

6 Whitehotchillifili
midfield, closer order 6th, further good ground and prominent wide going down the hill to 2 out, niggled along after and made more ground to turn for home disputing 3rd no more than a length down, looked to be travelling best for a few strides as led some 175 yards off last, shaken up, soon headed as the 2nd then the winner went past, outpaced, well held last, carried tail high and wandered under pressure, faded late, stuck to task but no extra final 100 yards. On merit the best British-trained mare in the race (certainly a better prospect than the third) but, though very much bred to stay further, hardly shaped like she needs a trip here.
126

7 Emmas Joy
midfield, mistake 4th, raced wide back straight, niggled along and lost ground before mistake 6th, dropped rear at the top of the hill under a push, made ground going to 2 out but still well back jumping and bumped rival, not hard ridden for around 100 yards going to home turn, shaken up after and kept on, passed a few approaching last, switched round rivals nearing it, hard ridden, ran on and passed more rivals, nearest finish. On the back foot after a couple of mistakes, but good late work.
130

8 Vienna Court
held up, windy jump 1st, headway on inner and midfield 6th, nudged along going down the hill to 2 out was closing when blundered, pushed along, stayed on off home turn under strong pressure, no extra approaching last, well held jumping, kept on run-in under a ride and was closing on the 7th final strides. Had a harder race than anything else but after a break, she’ll be better over 2m4f and more next season and better still in 2021/22 (she’s from the family of Denman).
124

9 Floressa
prominent, niggled along and lost a bit of ground before 5th though still largely prominent, nudged along approaching 2 out, pushed along away from it, held place to home turn, faded under a hand ride approaching last, well held jumping, put under pressure, kept on without making further impression run-in.
125

10 Mount Ida
prominent to midfield, closer order and prominent when ridden into 6th, niggled along at the top of the hill, firmly ridden along approaching 2 out, steadied into it and not fluent, held place to home turn under a ride bumping a rival whilst doing so, put under pressure some 175 yards off last, faded approaching it and soon beaten, well back when mistake, weakened further run-in, eased late, tailed off.
108

11 La Feline
held up, ridden into 6th, ridden along and struggling at the top of the hill, made little ground before 2 out, ridden and kept on from home turn, closed a little some 175 yards off last, no extra approaching it, eased and allowed to jump it in her own time, jumped left, weakened up the hill, tailed off.
106

12 Fort Worth Texas
prominent, mistake 2nd, made ground and tracked leaders 6th, niggled along and couldn’t hold place, some 4 lengths down 2 out, pushed along, faded approaching home turn, weakened approaching last, tailed off jumping, trailed in.
106

13 Timetochill
prominent, hung right but made ground to track leaders starting down the hill to 2 out, chased leader nearing it, moved largely comfortably and led off home turn, carried head high, pushed along and headed some 150 yards off last, swamped by rivals and weakened under a ride approaching last, dropped away, well held jumping, weakened further run-in, tailed off. A much better run than her finishing position, in front for a few strides after turning for home.
106

14 Ard Abhainn
midfield, at most nudged along after 6th, started a move going down the hill to 2 out, ridden into it, niggled along, good ground approaching home turn, pushed along on straightening some 6 lengths off leader, faded and wandered left some 150 yards off last, well held when steadied into it and mistake, weakened, eased to a virtual walk and passed by several close home. Sensibly not hard ridden when ninth or thereabouts was the best she could have done, is probably a bit better than her position (all her form over hurdles prior to this suggests as much).
109

15 Getaway Totherock
midfield, lost place back straight, in rear when mistake 5th, pushed along in last pair, lost touch with main body of the field and last/tailing off approaching 2 out,  rider persevered though in a hopeless position coming off home turn, picked off beaten ones, made no contribution.
104

16 Rosie And Millie
midfield, closer order and prominent 6th, moved comfortably enough at the top of the hill, further good ground approaching 2 out and jumped it at most a length down, niggled along after it and soon more firmly pushed, turned for home tracking leaders under a ride, weakened some 200 yards off last, well held when allowed to jump it in own time, weakened further run-in, tailed off.
103

17 Rhythm Divine
prominent, niggled along and lost place going to 6th, midfield and struggling under a push at the top of the hill, well back when bumped rival jumping 2 out, put under pressure approaching home turn to no avail, well back some 200 yards off last, tailed off when ran down it to left.
102

18 Minella Melody
chased leader, led 2nd, moved comfortably throughout and still largely comfortable 2 out, niggled along approaching home turn, headed straightening, pushed along, quickly faded, soon well held, weakened approaching last and rider eased off, tailed off when mistake, trailed in. It proved the wrong thing to make the running here with seven of the first eight home positioned midfield or worse so, having been unbeaten over hurdles coming in to this, she seems sure to be picking up the winning thread again in 2020/21.
98

19 Full Of Surprises
last, slow 1st, made a place but still in last trio when mistake 6th, niggled along and lost touch with main body of the field approaching 2 out, tailed off jumping, trailed in from home turn, tired when mistake last.
91

20 Midnights’ Gift
midfield on inner, mistake 4th and niggled along, held place till niggled along approaching 2 out, mistake there, pushed along, looked held approaching home turn, hard driven some 250 yards off last, weakened, well back and tailing off approaching last, tired when not fluent, trailed in.
87

P Anna Bunina
led approaching 2nd, mistake/went right and headed, chased leader after, hit 4th, niggled along and started to lose place going down the hill to 2 out, midfield to rear jumping, eased off, taken to one side and pulled up. Wasn’t tailed off when the rider called it a day but would have been had she continued.
0

P Red Archangel
held up rear, pushed along and lost touch with main body of the field approaching 2 out, left alone nearing it and mistake, tailed off approaching home turn, hopeless when pulled up before last.

FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP AMATEUR RIDERS´ HANDICAP CHASE
3m 2f

1 Milan Native
midfield, started a move 17th going comfortably, prominent on outer 18th, further ground and disputed lead 19th, wide and within half a length when pecked on landing 3 out, made ground and led going best home turn, niggled along approaching 2 out, led a length there, pushed along, stayed on, at most a length in front jumping last, put under pressure on landing, carried head high and idled in front, driven out, asserted inside final 125 yards, carried tail a little high but always doing enough. Had a bit in hand at the end here through idling and, only seven, might well be capable of better.
135

2 Kilfilum Cross
prominent, towards head of main group from 3rd, moving upsides leaders when mistake 19th, led and jumped left 3 out, headed home turn, pushed along and chased Milan Native to 2 out, hard driven between last 2, a length down last, hard driven, 1st 2 clear, no extra under pressure final 150 yards, went right close home, stuck to task, all out and was closed on by the 3rd final strides. Good run and unlucky to have run into one – likely that no trip will be too far for this one.
137

3 Bob Mahler
tracked leaders, headed main group from 3rd, flat-backed jump 5th, chased leader 17th, disputed lead 19th, pushed along before mistake and pecked on landing 3 out, chased leader after, moved comfortably enough till pushed along approaching home turn, every chance straightening, one pace approaching 2 out, driven and no extra approaching last, driven and bumped eventual 4th 200 yards out, stayed on well final 150 yards and was closing strongly on the 3rd last strides. Showing the stamina that got him a win in the four-mile-plus Edinburgh National prior to coming here, did his best work at the end after the win-chance had gone, and another year he wouldn’t be out of place in the Midlands and/or Scottish Nationals.
138

4 Plan Of Attack
midfield, closer order and prominent 14th, mistake 17th, disputed lead when on the wrong leg 19th, within half a length 3 out, moved comfortably and every chance home turn, pushed along approaching 2 out, disputed 2nd, hard driven, no extra approaching last and rather faded, driven and bumped eventual 3rd 200 yards out, no extra final 125 yards, kept on, was closed on by the next ones final strides.
135

5 Deise Aba
midfield, headway wide and prominent 14th, not fluent 15th and niggled along away from it, had made ground and prominent when blundered 18th, held place, tracked leaders going comfortably enough 3 out, niggled along approaching home turn, soon more firmly pushed, outpaced approaching 2 out, carried head to one side but kept on under pressure without making an impression before windy jump last, looked all out after it, hard driven, picked up under pressure when the 6th came upsides inside last 100 yards and stayed on to hold 5th, closing on the 4th last strides. Looked all done, then once he had company in the last half furlong picked up again – something of a curio.
134

6 Fitzhenry
held up, mistake 8th, lost ground and rear 15th, windy jump 16th, towards rear 19th, not shaken up and moved largely comfortably as started to edge closer approaching 3 out, pecked on landing, niggled along away from it, had 12 in front and was around 12 lengths down home turn, came wide straightening, pushed along and stayed on going to 2 out, put under pressure, kept on without making an impression before jumped big last, driven and passed beaten ones, going on well at the finish but unable to get 5th, was closing on the 4th last 50 yards, nearest finish. Another Patrick Mullins-ridden horse at this Festival that was given too much to do.
134

7 Champagne Platinum
held up, not fluent 2nd, slow 6th, started a move 17th, good ground and closing in midfield 18th, raced wide when blundered 19th, pushed along for a few strides after and good ground between horses to close on the leaders approaching 3 out, came back on the bit, pecked on landing, at most niggled along and within 3 lengths approaching home turn, pushed along on straightening, outpaced before mistake 2 out, looked held when put under pressure, no chance last, faded run-in, lost places final 175 yards, no more.
128

8 Cloth Cap
midfield, nudged along and a little ground 17th, pushed along and not clear run after 18th, some ground 19th, pushed along in prominent to midfield-position approaching 3 out, ridden, stayed on approaching home turn, passed a few under a ride and turned for home in 6th some 3 lengths down, outpaced approaching 2 out, looked held between last 2, driven and no extra before last, no more last 150 yards, eased close home.
119

9 Flying Angel
midfield, raced inner, was bumped approaching 10th (rider on Le Breuil appeared to be trying to stop him going up his inner), hit 10th, was hampered approaching home turn first time (Le Breuil again), mistake 12th, pushed along and struggling 15th, kept on under a push though making little ground before not fluent 3 out, kept on under a ride when was bumped approaching home turn (by Just A Sting), no extra and looked held approaching 2 out, weakened and well back last, picked off a beaten one last 100 yards.
124

10 The Kings Writ
prominent, niggled along and lost place/midfield approaching 18th, pushed along and struggling approaching 19th, looked held in midfield when was bumped approaching home turn, kept on and was only 6 lengths down coming off home turn, no extra before mistake 2 out, weakened, well held last, no more and lost 9th place close home.
116

11 Le Breuil
midfield, raced inner, wandered left and bumped rival approaching 10th (it was Flying Angel – the rider had his left elbow out, guessing to try and stop Flying Angel going up his inner), had made no ground before 17th, niggled along and had lost ground when mistake 18th, vigorously pushed along approaching 3 out and made little ground, looked held under a ride home turn, faded approaching 2 out, well back approaching last, passed a beaten one final strides, tailed off.
118

12 Militarian
midfield to rear, mistakes 9th and 10th, niggled along after 12th, mistake 13th, in last 3 when not much room 16th, last of the main body of the field when mistake 19th, looked held 3 out, kept on a bit approaching home turn but had a lot to do, turned for home wide, no further impression going to 2 out, eased after last and passed for 11th close home, tailed off.
109

13 Le Musee
midfield to rear on outer, windy jump 1st, dropped rear, slow 3rd, detached last 4th, hampered 9th, mistake 13th, tailed off 14th, mistake 19th, continued though looked hopeless 3 out, passed a couple of beaten ones before mistake 2 out, made no contribution.
107

14 Ardlethen
held up last, slow 1st, slight stumble on landing 2nd, niggled along in one from last 6th, had made a couple of places when jumped right 10th, niggled along again towards rear when ground taken approaching 17th, struggling when mistake 18th, a bit of ground wide before 19th, pushed along and kept on approaching 3 out, pecked on landing, ridden and lost ground approaching home turn, well held approaching 2 out as lost ground, dropped right out, barely clambered over last, tailed off.
105

15 Cabaret Queen
prominent, towards head of main group from 3rd, blundered 8th, tracked leaders 14th, blundered 15th, lost place and midfield 17th, pushed along and lost further ground before 18th, midfield 19th, put under pressure after 20th (the rider appeared to be using his right hand instead of his whip – assuming that he dropped his whip at some point), little impression, weakened approaching 2 out, tailed off last.
107

F Go Another One
held up, mistake 7th, fell 9th.
0

F One Style
chased leader, disputed it from 3rd, pair clear, 1st 2 had come back to the rest when definite lead 11th, took off on the wrong leg 17th, disputed lead 19th, pushed along, headed and beginning to drop back when fell 3 out.
0

P Coup De Pinceau
midfield, lost place and rear 9th, one from last when niggled along before 10th, became detached in last pair after, tailed off 18th, pushed along to no avail after 3 out, eased off and pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Like The Sound
midfield, mistake 10th, niggled along after 16th, a bit slow 17th, firmly pushed along and lost place, rear when mistake 18th, reminder, weakened further, tailed off when pulled up before 19th.
0

P Thomas Patrick
led, disputed it from 3rd, pair clear, 1st 2 had come back to rest when chased leader from 11th, a bit slow 12th, ridden into 15th, mistake 18th, dropping away in midfield when not fluent 19th, rear 3 out, pushed along and continued to weaken approaching home turn, tailed off, eased off and pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Fingerontheswitch
midfield, raced widest of the field after 12th, mistake 13th, niggled along approaching 17th, lost place and towards rear when mistake 19th, tailing off 3 out, weakened under pressure approaching home turn, looked heavy-legged turning in, well tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Just A Sting
midfield, mistakes 3rd and 15th, hard ridden away from 18th, making little ground when not fluent 19th, pushed along, kept on approaching 3 out, hard driven, no extra approaching home turn, looked held straightening, weakened, was dropping away when pulled up before 2 out. Sensible to pull up at that point rather than knock him about and finish 14th, but arguably this one was disappointing in the light of his Kempton win at Christmas.
0

U The Young Master
prominent to midfield, mistake 3rd, prominent in main group from 7th, mistake 16th, moving comfortably enough when blundered and unseated rider 19th. May well have taken a hand in the finish.

Day Four, Friday March 13th

JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE (GRADE 1)
2m 1f

1 Burning Victory
held up, keen, mistake 4th and dropped to last, mistake 5th, travelled better than some at the top of the hill and started a move wide approaching 2 out, midfield jumping, niggled along, passed more rivals, disputed 3rd under a push some 200 yards off last, continued to stay on, had moved into 10 lengths 2nd though no chance of beating Goshen when left in narrow lead last, hard ridden, stayed on to assert final 150 yards. Once Goshen departed, the whole thing went flat – she didn’t exactly have plenty left, taking half the run-in to get the better of Allmankind, and no celebration from Paul Townend passing the line, as he knew this was massively fortunate to say the least. It wasn’t a good performance by this filly, with mistakes on the way, and the form is a write-off – my ratings suggest the first seven, who finished in a heap, would all have struggled to get a place in the Boodles.
122

2 Aspire Tower
chased leader, mistake and went badly left 1st bumping rival, pulled hard, not fluent 2nd, moved upsides leader 4th, shuffled back a little and tracked leaders 5th, mistake 6th, niggled along to hold place at the top of the hill, held 3rd but outpaced as leading pair drew clear when mistake 2 out, pushed along approaching home turn, one pace 250 yards off last, kept on, was some 12 lengths down in 4th when went left and all over the place last, left 3rd, hard driven, one pace under pressure, stuck to task last 125 yards and took 2nd close home, no chance with Burning Victory. This performance was a shambles and connections are lucky to have got something out of it, and as jokes go, the one about Aspire Tower going for the 2021 Champion Hurdle that’s had some media coverage, falls some way short of Edinburgh Festival standard.
126

3 Allmankind
led, was joined 4th, definite lead again when mistake 5th, niggled along and tried to press on at the top of the hill, pushed along and not going as well as Goshen when dived at 2 out, put under pressure and stayed on approaching home turn, headed turning in, readily outpaced, kept on under pressure, faded approaching last and had lost 2nd when left in that place by Goshen’s unseat last, presented with every chance and hard driven, no extra as Burning Victory drew clear, weakened and lost 2nd final 75 yards. A brave effort to try and make all, the effort of trying to stay with Goshen only telling in the final 100 yards; if you’re asking me which of the first three is going to win a race next season, I’m suggesting this one over and above the eventual first two.
126

4 Navajo Pass
prominent to midfield, more prominent from 2nd, in close to 6th, ridden and lost place/midfield approaching 2 out, put under pressure approaching home turn, looked held under pressure approaching last, wandered, disputed 5th when dived at last and left 4th, put under pressure, closed on those ahead final 200 yards, stuck to task and was closing on the 3rd final 50 yards. It bears repeating that Goshen apart this was a poor Triumph, but this one was doing some good late work and, having won over 1m6f on the Flat, could do a bit better over 2m4f over hurdles.
125

5 Sir Psycho
prominent to midfield, nudged along and some headway to be prominent in main group after 6th, struggling to hold place and back in midfield when mistake 2 out, pushed along, hung left approaching home turn, one pace 250 yards off last, looked well held when left 8 lengths 5th jumping last, driven, kept on, stuck to task and was closing on those ahead final 100 yards. This one brought form worthy of a Triumph candidate to the table courtesy of his win in the Victor Ludorum at Haydock, but that was on heavy ground – there’s some noticeable knee lift in his action – and he was some way off that here.
124

6 Cerberus
held up rear, a little headway when mistake 5th, blundered 6th, struggling towards rear under a push approaching 2 out, stayed on approaching home turn and passed a couple, put under pressure some 200 yards off last, didn’t find more, looked held when left 6th and mistake/went left last, kept on final 175 yards, one pace under pressure close home. A plethora of mistakes prevented him getting closer than he was at the line.
123

7 A Wave Of The Sea
midfield, mistake 3rd, in close to 5th, a little ground and in touch with leaders when pushed along starting down the hill to 2 out, outpaced and back in midfield when mistake there, ridden approaching home turn, faded off home turn, looked held approaching last under a hand ride, stayed on after it, no extra final 100 yards, stuck to task.
123

8 Solo
prominent to midfield, mistake 1st, keen, prominent approaching 3rd, nudged along at head of main group as 1st 2 pulled clear when mistake 2 out, pushed along in 10 lengths 4th approaching home turn, lost place turning in, no more under pressure approaching last, looked held when left 8 lengths 7th last, driven, faded last 175 yards, was being closed on by the 9th final strides. It’s already out there that this one has joined present connections with chasing in mind and, with the age allowance that four year-old novice chasers get, they surely won’t waste time when Autumn comes round.
119

9 Never Do Nothing
midfield, not fluent 4th, mistakes 5th and 6th, pushed along at the top of the hill, held place to 2 out, faded off home turn under a ride, couldn’t find extra approaching last, looked held when steadied into it and mistake, well back run-in, was closing on the 8th final strides.
117

10 Lord Lamington
held up, mistake 3rd and niggled along away from it, mistake 5th, a little ground and midfield after 6th, niggled along approaching 2 out, pushed along and faded approaching home turn, well held under pressure some 250 yards off last, no further impression.
111

11 Hook Up
held up, in last pair when mistake 5th and pushed along away from it, mistake 6th, niggled along, rear of main group approaching 2 out, pushed along and quickly left behind approaching home turn, looked tired and tailed off when mistake last, made no contribution.
93

12 Yellow Tiger
held up, headway and midfield when mistake 5th, dropped rear after 6th and vigorously pushed along, lost further ground and tailed off approaching 2 out, hopeless when mistake last, trailed in.
56

U Goshen
tracked leaders, moved upsides and disputed lead 4th, chased leader 5th, niggled along approaching 6th, travelling better when moved upsides Allmankind 2 out, pushed along and led home turn, found plenty and pulled clear, taken to stands’ side, was pouring it on in at least a 10-length lead when mistake and unseated rider last. He should have been the easiest winner of the Festival; instead it was the most analysed failure-to-complete of the week. No need for me to add anything to what’s already been said and written, except that I’m looking forward to seeing Goshen again in 2020/21, for all that there was no strength in depth in this Triumph.

RANDOX HEALTH COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE (GRADE 3)
2m 1f

1 Saint Roi
midfield, mistake 5th, in close to 6th, closer order at the top of the hill, closed up further down the hill and within 5 lengths 2 out, significant headway on the bit approaching home turn and tracked leaders only 3 lengths down coming off the bend, effort delayed, produced to challenge and was the only one on the bit 100 yards off last, led on landing, shaken up, ran on to draw clear run-in, readily and decisive. Settled this in a matter of strides once given the office and recognised Champion Hurdle-trials are probably where this one’s headed for starters in 2020/21.
140

2 Aramon
held up last, had made a couple of places when mistake 5th, niggled along and started a move at the top of the hill, quite wide and made places to get into midfield by 2 out, closer order going comfortably approaching home turn, plenty to pass turning in, niggled along, came widest of all and made very good ground to pass several under a push approaching last, within half a length jumping, hung left, hard driven and picked up well 175 yards out, stayed on past a couple to take 2nd post, no chance with Saint Roi. This was as frustrating as it was good – he wasn’t beating Saint Roi anyway, but the temperament that’s been on show for many of his displays (notably when tailed off behind Sharjah at Leopardstown over Christmas) was in evidence around halfway, and again immediately after the last.
148

3 Embittered
prominent, chased leader 6th, disputed lead at the top of the hill, led going comfortably 2 out, niggled along approaching home turn, pushed along 200 yards off last, stayed on well under a hand ride, was strongly challenged nearing it, led a neck jumping, headed on landing, hard driven, outpaced, kept on, disputed 2nd till lost the place close home, stuck to task to the line. Ended up being the setter-upper but gave his all and it’s hard to suggest that he could have done any better.
144

4 Buildmeupbuttercup
midfield to rear, mistake 5th, started to close and midfield after 6th, travelled comfortably but no further ground approaching 2 out, closed up further on the bit after, abruptly switched wider to get a gap approaching home turn, was within 6 lengths in 7th coming off the bend, edged closer still and tracked leaders approaching last yet to be shaken up, was a neck down jumping, hard driven, outpaced 175 yards out, stuck to task under pressure, disputed 2nd till caught for the place final strides. A perfectly-timed challenge after a waiting ride, but ran into one in his stable companion and unlucky to be run out of the places very late.
139

5 Elusive Belle
midfield, closer order and prominent to midfield 6th, good ground and tracked leaders at the top of the hill, at most half a length down 2 out, travelled comfortably to home turn, shaken up some 250 yards off last, wandered under a hand ride and not stay on, beginning to look held before slight mistake last, hard ridden, faded last 150 yards, no more.
127

6 Moon Over Germany
midfield, slightly closer order when mistake 5th, lost ground and carried head to one side approaching 6th, eye-catching headway going comfortably going down the hill and passed many to dispute the lead jumping 2 out, pushed along and a neck down home turn, hung left under a ride some 250 yards off last but stayed on, soon put under pressure, every chance till was strongly challenged and headed a few strides off last, hung left again and weakened last 150 yards, lost ground on the 5th and was being strongly closed on by the 7th last 100 yards. Not the best at winning races despite his wide-margin success in the Red Rum Chase at Aintree in 2019, his best chase form made him look well-treated and given where he was on the home turn, you wonder how good this would have been if his effort had been delayed.
133

7 Thatsy
held up, in close to 2nd, niggled along starting the circuit, niggled along at the top of the hill and passed a few, midfield when mistake 2 out, niggled along, passed a couple more but still 10 lengths to find home turn, soon more firmly pushed along, switched a bit wider some 175 yards off last, kept on under a ride, jumped last in 7th some 6 lengths down, driven, kept on, closed on the 6th last 125 yards, just failed to get the place, no impression on those ahead.
131

8 Beat The Judge
prominent to midfield, took off too early 2nd, closer order approaching 6th, midfield when niggled along at the top of the hill, a little ground approaching 2 out, niggled along, stayed on and disputed 4th some 4 or 5 lengths down home turn, soon more firmly pushed, sustained effort and had half a chance a length and a bit down approaching last, faded nearing it, steadied into it, hard driven, faded under pressure last 175 yards, kept on last 50 yards.
129

9 Sir Valentine
tracked leaders, ridden into 4th, niggled along approaching 6th, lost a couple of places and niggled along at the top of the hill , dropped back to midfield under a push  when mistake 2 out, hard ridden, looked held when put under strong pressure home turn, kept on without making an impression approaching last, well back jumping, stayed on late and made 2 places final strides, no impression on those ahead. Given a harder time than some and made late gains – unfortunately the prize money only went down to sixth.
123

10 Mohaayed
prominent to midfield, headway 3rd, prominent 4th, niggled along approaching 6th, pushed along at the top of the hill, holding place when switched wider approaching 2 out, hard ridden approaching home turn, put under pressure approaching last, faded nearing it, well held jumping, stuck to task, lost a place late.
131

11 Scaramanga
prominent to midfield early, midfield when mistake 4th and pushed along away from it, niggled along approaching 2 out, firmly pushed along after it, kept on and within 7 lengths disputing 8th when put under pressure home turn, stayed on till faded some 125 yards off last, beginning to look held when mistake, faded further run-in, lost a place late.
126

12 Oakley
held up last pair, briefly niggled along after 5th, made a place or 2 6th, niggled along at the top of the hill, more firmly pushed for a few yards then back on the bridle though making no ground 100 yards off 2 out, pushed along after it, passed a couple but still 12 lengths down with 15 or 16 to pass home turn, put under pressure and stayed on some 175 yards off last, closed on those ahead, jumped last disputing 10th some 10 lengths down, driven, stuck to task till flattened out last 100 yards, fading at the line.
126

13 Lethal Steps
midfield, keen hold, a little headway when mistake 3rd, edging forward again when mistake 5th, raced wide and closer order to be prominent after 6th, further good headway and at most 3 lengths down when ground taken and not fluent 2 out, niggled along, soon more firmly pushed and faded, turned for home in 19th some 12 to 15 lengths back, pushed along approaching last, kept on, well held jumping, no more run-in.
120

14 Tiger Voice
held up, headway and midfield when ridden into 4th, 5th and 6th, moved comfortably at the top of the hill, niggled along approaching 2 out, steadied into it and mistake, ridden along after, had ground taken approaching home turn, not clear run turning in and well back straightening, put under pressure and kept on a bit some 150 yards off last, no extra nearing it, no more run-in.
118

15 Ciel De Neige
midfield, mistake 3rd, closer order after 6th racing wide, niggled along approaching 2 out, vigorously pushed along after it, stayed on, turned for home disputing 4th some 4 lengths down, ridden and weakened under pressure some 200 yards off last, well beaten when mistake, no more up the hill.
122

16 Christopher Wood
midfield, nudged along after 6th, steered wide approaching 2 out, pushed along after it, made little ground and disputed 10th some 8 or 9 lengths down home turn, no impression under pressure some 175 yards off last, well held when blundered, no more run-in.
125

17 Rathhill
held up, mistake 2nd, last pair approaching 6th, niggled along away from it, niggled along racing wide approaching 2 out, mistake, became detached and hung left as put under pressure approaching home turn, still in rear and some 15 to 17 lengths down turning in, no impression when jumped right last, no more up the hill.
112

18 Adjali
prominent, niggled along 4th, lost place and midfield 5th, niggled again, vigorously pushed along after 6th, little impression approaching 2 out, passed a couple under a push and turned for home disputing 15th some 12 lengths down, put under pressure, no extra approaching last, weakened nearing it, well held, tailed off last 100 yards.
114

19 Tiger Tap Tap
held up, dropped to last and niggled along 4th, good headway wide on the bit going down the hill and closing in midfield approaching 2 out, widest of all but still travelled well and closed on those ahead approaching home turn, pushed along on straightening, soon put under pressure, no extra, faded approaching last, eased off before jumped left, weakened further run-in, tailed off. A disappointing response when pressure was applied maybe, but he wasn’t going anywhere much in the first half of the race and covered more ground than anyone else from the top of the hill to the home turn having gone widest.
112

20 Pakens Rock
led, headed 2nd, chased leader till lost 2nd 6th, held place and disputed lead at the top of the hill, niggled along, lost place approaching 2 out and prominent jumping though clearly fading, dropped to midfield under a ride home turn, quickly dropped further back and weakening in midfield approaching last, tailed off.
111

21 Zanza
midfield, mistake 1st, lost place and pushed along in rear 4th, reminder after 5th, mistake 6th, dropped to detached last when pecked on landing 2 out, hard driven, hung left and not staying on approaching home turn, only passed beaten ones and no impression approaching last, no more run-in, tailed off, made little contribution.
108

22 Eldorado Allen
prominent, at most 3 lengths down when mistake 6th, ridden along and started to lose place at the top of the hill, midfield 2 out, dropped out further and already towards rear when ground taken approaching home turn, weakened approaching last, tailed off.
108

23 Le Ligerien
chased leader, led 2nd, mistakes 5th and 6th, disputed lead at the top of the hill, pushed along and just headed when blundered 2 out, ridden and weakened approaching home turn, dropped right out approaching last, trailed in well tailed off.
59

P Stolen Silver
tracked leaders, niggled along and wandered approaching 3rd (thought about running out to the inner), mistake, lost place and midfield when not fluent 5th, dropping away when blundered 6th, eased off at the top of the hill, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.

ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICES´ HURDLE (GRADE 1) (REGISTERED AS THE SPA NOVICES´ HURDLE)
3m

1 Monkfish
chased leader, mistake 6th and shuffled back a little though remained prominent, mistake 8th, nudged along at the top of the hill, headway approaching 2 out and jumped it disputing lead, travelled best approaching home turn and led a neck turning in, shaken up, headed 250 yards off last, pushed along, stayed on approaching last, wandered right taking a rival’s ground (Thyme Hill) a few strides off last (right-hand whip), narrow lead jumping, hard driven, headed and went half a length down as Fury Road went on, rallied under strong pressure, led again two strides from the post. A terrific finish, and this one’s attitude in the last 100 yards should be remembered in a year’s time, with the 2021 Stayers’ Hurdle seeming to be up for grabs.
141

2 Latest Exhibition
midfield, ridden into 6th and 10th, headway and prominent at the top of the hill, travelled comfortably approaching 2 out and a length down jumping, niggled along and switched off inner approaching home turn bumping a rival (House Island, who was about to fade), pushed along straightening, taken over to stands’ side rail and hung left but led briefly approaching last, disputed lead jumping, hard driven run-in, led narrowly till headed by Fury Road 150 yards out, sustained effort under pressure and still every chance till Monkfish went on two or three strides from the post. Had his chance and lost nothing in defeat.
141

3 Fury Road
midfield, mistake 9th, headway going comfortably at the top of the hill, pushed along after 2 out and had several in front, pushed along, stayed on approaching home turn, sustained effort 200 yards off last, switched inside rivals and closed on leaders under a firm hand ride, drew upsides last, put under pressure, went right and across eventual 4th 175 yards out, led narrowly, sustained effort under driving, headed two or three strides from the post and lost 2nd on the line. Went down with honours, and bearing in mind whereabouts he came from in relation to the others involved in the finish (was a length and a half behind Latest Exhibition jumping the second last, who in turn was about that much behind Monkfish and Thyme Hill), could have done with a stiffer test.
141

4 Thyme Hill
held up, in close to 5th, raced wide final circuit and sent closer to the pace 7th, prominent at the top of the hill, niggled along going down the hill to 2 out, made further ground and at most half a length down jumping, travelled comfortably, niggled along approaching home turn, pushed along straightening, switched off the outside some 250 yards off last, stayed on and challenged between horses, had ground taken by Monkfish and rider forced to check and switch inside winner and 2nd two or three strides off last, driven, had ground taken again as Fury Road went right 175 yards out, one pace under pressure last 125 yards, stuck to task. Some might not agree but I don’t think the trouble in running that he met affected the outcome, particularly the way Monkfish rallied to lead again.
139

5 Janidil
held up rear, mistakes 2nd and 4th, raced inner, a little ground and just about midfield 10th, pulled off inner and travelled comfortably though had 4 lengths to find jumping 2 out, niggled along, not clear run approaching home turn, pushed along, stayed on once in line for home, put under pressure 200 yards off last, couldn’t get to leaders, outpaced and left behind, some 8 lengths down over last, no more run-in.
129

6 Sempo
midfield, niggled along at the top of the hill and headway wide approaching 2 out, pushed along, bumped rival approaching home turn, stayed on and was 5 lengths down in 7th under a ride straightening, soon put under pressure, no impression approaching last, faded, well held jumping, kept on last 150 yards.
127

7 The Wolf
slowly away and niggled along to make a start, rear, mistake 2nd, pushed along in last pair after 10th, travelled more comfortably going down the hill to 2 out but still a lot to do when mistake and unbalanced on landing (ended up virtually vertical for a stride), put under pressure wide approaching home turn, passed a few stragglers but no impression on leaders and well held approaching last, kept on well last 150 yards, nearest finish.
122

8 House Island
led, headed 6th, chased leader when took off too early 7th, niggled along approaching 10th, held place, disputed lead going down the hill to 2 out, put under pressure approaching home turn, was bumped turning in, some 3 lengths down straightening, hard ridden, faded, weakened before and after last, stuck to task last 100 yards but not quite get 7th.
122

9 Foxy Jacks
midfield, mistake 10th, headway at the top of the hill, moved comfortably approaching 2 out, pushed along after, keeping on when not clear run home turn, put under pressure, no impression under a ride approaching last, well held jumping, kept on last 125 yards.
121

10 Aione
held up, raced wide when ridden into 6th, headway round the field at the top of the hill, closed on them widest of all approaching 2 out, pushed along, hard driven off home turn, no more around 200 yards off last, faded, well back jumping, no more, lost further ground last 100 yards.
119

11 The Cashel Man
midfield, mistake 3rd, headway and prominent before 6th, lost place and dropped rear 7th, last and pushed along after 8th, going worst of the field after 10th, put under pressure after 2 out, looked held home turn, no impression under pressure some 200 yards off last, lost further ground, tailed off.
106

12 Oscar Academy
prominent, keen and pulled his way forward to dispute lead approaching 5th, led 6th, disputed lead after 10th, pushed along after 2 out, headed, put under pressure home turn, weakened quickly on straightening, dropped right away approaching last, weakened further run-in, tailed off. You can’t pull as hard as this one did early on in the race and expect to get home in a three-mile Grade 1.
105

13 Ramses De Teillee
tracked leaders, shuffled back a little when a bit slow 4th, remained prominent, slight mistake 8th, mistakes 9th and 10th, niggled along and tracked leaders going down the hill to 2 out, at most half a length down jumping, ridden and faded, put under pressure approaching home turn, quickly beaten on straightening, dropped right out approaching last, tailed off. Something must have gone amiss here and he’s better than this, but he’s got miles on the clock through chasing, so 2020/21 could go either way for this one.
90

14 Redford Road
held up, mistakes 2nd and 8th, pushed along before 10th, struggling to make ground under a ride before 2 out, put under pressure and no more from home turn, dropped away before last, tailed off when mistake last, made no contribution.
86

P Cat Tiger
held up, blundered 3rd, raced inner, niggled along and headway/midfield 10th, lost place at the top of the hill and soon rear, reminder after 2 out, no impression approaching home turn, dropped right out on straightening, tailed off when pulled up before last.
0

P Cobbler’s Way
prominent to midfield, niggled along and midfield after 10th, headway though still niggled and prominent going down the hill to 2 out, midfield at most 4 lengths down when caught a bump and stumbled just after it, ridden, couldn’t find more home turn, fading in 8 to 10 lengths 8th when suddenly eased and pulled up before last.
0

P Lieutenant Rocco
prominent, mistake 1st, niggled along and lost place/midfield after 10th, weakened further approaching 2 out, hard driven approaching home turn, dropped right out and rear/weakening when given more reminders around 200 yards off last, dropped further back, tailed off when pulled up before last.
0

P Harry Senior
midfield, blundered badly 5th (took off too early and landed on it with his front hooves, knocking the panel down), soon dropped rear. detached last and niggled along after 6th, dropping away when pulled up before 7th. From the Colin Tizzard stable which, with a couple of exceptions, didn’t turn up at this Festival, this one had impressed when winning the 2m5f Grade 2 novice at the Festival Trials meeting, and is a tallish chasing sort to look at, so chances are he’ll leave this behind over fences next season.

midfield, closer order and at most 5 lengths off leaders when mistake 10th, further ground and prominent at the top of the hill, niggled along approaching 2 out, mistake and bumped rival on landing, weakened quickly approaching home turn and in rear turning in, already detached when given unnecessary reminders, dropped further back, tailed off when pulled up before last. He was already dropping away when put under pressure approaching the last and the jockey was lucky to escape a ban for giving a hard time to a clearly tiring horse.

MAGNERS CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP CHASE (GRADE 1)
3m 2f

1 Al Boum Photo
midfield, raced wide when not fluent 3rd, closer order 12th, mistake 13th, headway and moved upsides leaders 18th, chased Santini up front at the top of the hill, disputed lead 4 out, led half a length 3 out, travelled best approaching home turn, pushed along on straightening, led approaching 2 out, in close, hard ridden, stayed on between last 2, possibly narrowly headed approaching last, disputed lead jumping, put under strong pressure, definite lead 175 yards out, stayed on genuinely, was closed on by Santini inside last 100 yards, held on well final strides. Left it all on the track, and who’s to say he won’t take after Best Mate and complete the hattrick in 2021 – likely next stop Tramore on New Year’s Day.
170

2 Santini
prominent to midfield, not much room 1st, headway and prominent approaching 14th, improvement from 17th and niggled along/got upsides leaders 18th, led at the top of the hill and took Monalee’s ground forcing him to check, disputed lead 4 out, pushed along straight after, chased Al Boum Photo 3 out at most a neck down, pushed along and chased winner approaching home turn, was a neck down on straightening, outpaced approaching 2 out and jumped it a length down, switched round winner between last 2, still a length and a bit to find last, nearly went into the back of Lostintranslation and switched round rival, put under strong pressure, picked up inside final 150 yards, stayed on well, closed on Al Boum Photo last 75 yards but never quite getting there. Not hard to pinpoint why Santini finished second instead of winning this Gold Cup; 1/ the drying ground, and 2/ the steadier-than-expected pace on the first circuit. Some scepticism remains in this corner, as it should with a horse who has race-long flat spots, but I won’t be so quick to rule him out in 2021, particularly if it’s heavy.
170

3 Lostintranslation
midfield, closer order 12th, raced inner when prominent to midfield 18th, switched wide of the leaders at the top of the hill and made ground to track leaders approaching 4 out, drew upsides jumping, chased Al Boum Photo 3 out at most a neck down, at most nudged along after it, niggled along home turn, pushed along and stayed on upsides Al Boum Photo when in close to 2 out, hard ridden, sustained effort and might have led narrowly approaching last, upsides jumping, hard driven, headed 175 yards out, no extra final 100 yards, faded late and was being closed on by the 4th but stuck to task. Smashing run – not the first to do well in the Gold Cup after doing badly in the King George – and goes on next year’s shortlist, although there is a doubt over stamina given the way that he faded, albeit only in the final 100 yards.
168

4 Monalee
prominent, headway and tracked leaders 6th, in close to 13th, led approaching 14th, in close to 16th, was joined up front 18th, soon headed and hampered as had ground taken by Santini at the top of the hill (jockey had one foot over the inside rail), tracked leaders 4 out, was a length and a bit behind the 1st 3 jumping 3 out, niggled along after, shaken up home turn, made no ground from there to 2 out, driven on landing, outpaced between last 2, looked held last some 3 lengths down, put under strong pressure, stayed on well last 175 yards, closed on 1st 3, no extra last 50 yards, was closing on the fading 3rd at the line came. In a busy finish, proved that he stays the Gold Cup-trip (has looked more of a Ryanair-horse in the past), and arguably would have finished third but for the incident with Santini at the top of the hill.
168

5 Delta Work
held up, overjumped and pecked on landing 2nd, nudged along 14th, mistake 16th and pushed along away from it, pushed again from 18th, travelled more comfortably from 4 out, at most a length and a half down when niggled along after 3 out, pushed along approaching home turn, within 3 lengths home turn though several were going better, outpaced under a ride before mistake 2 out, put under pressure, looked held approaching last, driven and kept on, took 5th inside final 150 yards, no impression on 1st 4. Didn’t turn up, an early error at the 2nd setting the tone and the writing on the wall on the back straight as the race took shape.
164

6 Real Steel
dropped out in detached last, made up a little ground after 2nd, in close to 4th, not fluent 5th and 6th, moved comfortably most of the way and started to close 19th, at most 5 lengths down 4 out racing wide, closer order travelling comfortably going down the hill and at most 3 lengths down 3 out racing widest of all, good ground on the bit approaching home turn, within 2 lengths on straightening, arguably travelled best for a couple of strides approaching 2 out, every chance jumping, hard driven, no extra approaching last, driven, faded and wandered, stuck to task but continued to lose ground on those ahead last 50 yards. Where he got this from after his shambles of an effort at Gowran Park – his only flop of the season, to be fair – goodness knows, but he failed for stamina from approaching the last, and would be better off in the Ryanair next year.
163

7 Kemboy
disputed lead till jumped right 1st, tracked leaders after, mistake 3rd, gradually lost ground and midfield 10th, lost further ground and towards rear when blundered 15th, mistake 18th, detached last 4 out, not hard ridden but made little ground before not fluent 3 out, hard ridden, kept on approaching home turn, straightened in 10th and had 6 lengths to find, no extra approaching 2 out, driven and no impression between last 2, jumped slightly right last, driven and went left, no more last 150 yards. Hasn’t been in the same form this season as last, illustrated by a poor round of jumping here, and perhaps his Punchestown win from Al Boum Photo last May 1st – a harder race than he had when winning at Aintree the time before – has left a mark.
158

8 Clan Des Obeaux
midfield to rear, headway and midfield when not fluent 10th, mistake 17th, niggled along and lost place/midfield to rear after 18th, niggled along when mistake 4 out, pushed along and little impression approaching home turn, looked held 2 out, dropped back under pressure approaching last where jumped right, no more run-in, eased off last 100 yards. Reportedly he won’t run at Cheltenham again, this performance confirming that – the reverse of Lostintranslation – he runs Kempton better, so the King George hattrick-bid is his entire season’s narrative in 2020/21.
153

9 Bristol De Mai
chased leader, briefly led 2nd, led 4th, ridden into 5th, briefly headed 12th, headed approaching 14th, chased leader when mistake 17th, held place to 18th, still within 2 lengths when ridden into 4 out, not hard ridden before 3 out, shaken up after it, weakened approaching home turn, dropped rear approaching 2 out, hampered by the faller, well held last, kept on a bit last 125 yards. The expected flop for this one, away from the Betfair Chase at Haydock.
152

10 Chris’s Dream
midfield to rear, raced wide and headway in midfield approaching 17th, lost ground and niggled along after, headway after 18th and prominent to midfield approaching 4 out, nudged along approaching 3 out, some 3 to 4 lengths down when niggled along on landing, pushed along, held place to home turn under a ride, weakened approaching 2 out where mistake, lost further ground approaching last, no more, kept on a bit last 125 yards. Plucky effort but outclassed – worth noting, though, that this counts as his best career-run during the months of March and April, every start after February prior to this having ended up in heavier defeats.
152

11 Elegant Escape
led, briefly headed 2nd, mistake 3rd, headed 4th, chased leader after, led briefly 12th, niggled along approaching 14th, firmly pushed along approaching 16th, shuffled back to rear 4 out, dropped further back and looked beaten in last pair 3 out under a ride, dropped further back under pressure approaching home turn, well back when jumped right last, kept on a bit last 125 yards. A good result for this one, considering that something like his pulled-up the outing before this was expected.
151

F Presenting Percy
held up, in last pair when in close to 11th, was 6 lengths down travelling largely comfortably 4 out, edged closer approaching 3 out, pecked on landing, effort delayed approaching home turn, shaken up on straightening, staying on and was upsides Monalee when fell 2 out. After another couple of watches I now accept that he had more chance of making the frame than I thought in the immediate aftermath, and though I don’t think the win would have happened, he’d probably have finished near Monalee, no more than a length behind that one.

ST. JAMES´S PLACE FOXHUNTER CHALLENGE CUP OPEN HUNTERS´ CHASE
3m 2f

1 It Came To Pass
midfield, mistake 3rd, good ground going comfortably and prominent in chasing group approaching 17th, further progress and tracked 2nd and 3rd 4 out, closed up further and at most a length down jumping 3 out, travelled best approaching home turn, produced to challenge on straightening, led approaching 2 out, pushed along, stayed on, put under pressure and hung left though sustained effort to go further clear approaching last, led 6 lengths jumping, continued to run on, drew further clear and not stopping passing the post. Priced on his pulled-up in a point at Kilfeacle in January on his most recent outing, go back in his record and there is a defeat of Billaway to his name, and safe to say he left all previous form behind; also safe to say he’s a contender next year.
147

2 Billaway
midfield, slight mistake 2nd, mistakes 3rd and 9th, midfield to rear after, headway and midfield when jumped right 15th, niggled along 17th, in close to 18th and pushed along away from it, good progress and closing in midfield 4 out though still niggled, closed on leaders further and around 5 lengths down 3 out, effort delayed approaching home turn and 6 lengths down when pushed along on straightening, stayed on approaching 2 out, took 2nd approaching last, some 6 lengths down when in close, hard driven, one pace, stuck to task but no impression on It Came To Pass. Perhaps not that much of a surprise, this not the first time that this one has played second fiddle to the winner, and with several mistakes on the way it was always going to be tough.
137

3 Shantou Flyer
prominent, mistake 1st, not fluent 12th, mistake 15th, made ground from 4 out, chased leader and only a neck down 3 out, led approaching home turn, a bit unbalanced turning in, stayed on, headed approaching 2 out, no extra and lost 2nd approaching last, hard ridden, kept on, no further impression. Fine effort, well placed throughout.
132

4 Staker Wallace
midfield, started a move going comfortably and closer order approaching 17th, prominent in main group 4 out, progress going smoothly and no more than a length and a half down 3 out, in 4 lengths 4th when pushed along home turn, in close to 2 out, outpaced under a ride, well held disputing 4th last, took the place run-in, kept on, stuck to task but no impression on those ahead. Didn’t find as much as it looked as though he would going to the last but has probably given his running.
129

5 Minella Rocco
held up, good ground wide and midfield 16th, further headway though niggled along from 4 out, no more than 3 lengths down 3 out, pushed along, put under pressure approaching home turn, stayed on, closed on leaders till mistake 2 out, soon well held and faded approaching last, no more run-in. Considering he’s an extreme distance-stayer he was given quite a bit to do, although that said he looked pretty empty between the last two and probably wasn’t at his best.
121

6 Marcle Ridge
led, clear, in close to 11th, not fluent 15th, pushed along and pressed on maintaining 10 lengths clear advantage approaching 18th, beginning to tire when mistake 4 out, pushed along and the game looked up approaching 3 out, jumped it only a neck in front, ridden, headed approaching home turn, stuck to task under a ride and still within a length coming off home turn, ridden and faded after 2 out, well held approaching last, weakened run-in and lost 5th inside last 175 yards. Didn’t stay after a dashing ride but there were some cracking jumps, and another time this one could be quite an exhilarating sight in the Aintree Foxhunters’.
120

7 Law Of Gold
midfield, mistake 4th (water) and lost a length and a half, niggled along away from it, niggled again and headway 17th, closing going better than a few 4 out, pushed along and carried head to one side approaching 3 out, couldn’t hold place, faded approaching home turn under pressure, well held approaching 2 out, weakened after last and was being closed on by the next ones final 100 yards, tailed off.
109

8 Kalabaloo
prominent, lost place and midfield when mistake 9th, niggled along and made a little ground approaching 13th, vigorously pushed along and struggling after 15th, raced wide from 4 out, little ground under a push before mistake 3 out, weakened approaching home turn, tailed off from 2 out, no further impression, was closing on the 7th final strides, tailed off.
102

9 Alcala
held up one from last, mistake 2nd, detached from main body of field after, struggling in last trio 17th, looked held when blundered 4 out, tailed off from 3 out, kept on a bit after last and was closing on those ahead final strides, tailed off.
107

10 Dylrow
nodded on landing 1st, midfield to rear, same sort of position through race, mistake 4 out, niggled along and closed on leaders, around 6 lengths down when in close to 3 out, hard driven and kept on approaching home turn, weakened approaching 2 out, continued to drop away between last 2, kept on a bit late, tailed off.
107

11 Don Poli
mistake 1st, rear, mistake 11th and pushed along, still pushed but picked off a couple of stragglers 17th, tailed off 3 out, no more under pressure approaching 2 out, tailed off.
101

12 Arctic Skipper
held up, pushed along from 17th, a little headway wide and midfield 18th, pushed along after 4 out, closed a little on those ahead, till weakened under a push from 3 out, tailed off 2 out, no more.
101

13 Top Wood
midfield, in close to 10th, prominent going to 11th, further ground to chase clear leader approaching 15th, pushed along before 3 out, hard ridden and faded approaching home turn, ridden and weakened approaching 2 out, dropped away between last 2, jumped right last, tailed off.
89

14 Duhallow Tornado
prominent, mistake 2nd, had ground taken and rider had to check bend after 2nd, midfield after, mistake 9th, weakened final circuit, rear 17th, tailed off 3 out, hopeless when slightly hampered and mistake 2 out, final mistake last, trailed in.
71

15 Southfield Theatre
prominent, not fluent 1st, tracked leaders after 2nd, stood off 7th, mistakes 10th and 16th, vigorously ridden and losing place when mistake 17th, midfield after, struggling when mistake 18th, tailed off when mistake 3 out, weakened further, well tailed off when mistake 2 out,.
71

16 Mr Mercurial
prominent till shuffled back approaching 11th as leaders went clear, in close to 13th, mistake 16th, lost place and pushed along in midfield before mistake 17th, dropped rear 18th, tailed off 3 out, weakened further, hopeless last, trailed in.
32

17 Sausalito Sunrise
midfield, mistakes 11th and 16th, slow 17th, ridden and no extra after 4 out, well held 3 out, weakened approaching home turn, no more under a ride approaching 2 out, weakened further, jumped right last, eased off, well tailed off.
0

P Rewritetherules
last, slow 1st, detached from main body of field after 2nd, mistakes 15th and 16th, struggling when mistake 17th, blundered 4 out, tailed off 3 out, eased off and pulled up after home turn.
0

P Caid Du Berlais
midfield, struggling and lost place/rear when mistake 18th, tailed off 3 out, eased down and pulled up before 2 out, hampering a continuing rival (Duhallow Tornado, who was hopelessly tailed off himself) in doing so.
0

P Stellar Notion
chased leader, not fluent 3rd, jumped left 10th, not fluent 12th, pushed along and started to lose place 13th, gradually weakened and rear 16th, detached and tailed off when pulled up after 17th,
0

P Bishops Road
midfield, losing place and rear when mistake 5th, pushed along away from it, looked reluctant after 6th and for all intents and purposes pulled himself up before 7th.

JOHNNY HENDERSON GRAND ANNUAL CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP CHASE (GRADE 3)
2m

1 Chosen Mate
midfield, mistake 1st, shuffled back and towards rear when not fluent 7th, travelled comfortably but 12 lengths down and plenty to do approaching 10th, rear of main group 11th, had most still in front and was around 7 lengths down as edged closer going comfortably approaching 3 out, very smooth headway on the bit and turned for home in 7th some 4 lengths down, passed more still on the bit and jumped 2 out in 3rd 2 lengths down, niggled along and led between last 2, drew 3 lengths clear when ridden into and in close to last, hard driven, stayed on well to maintain advantage up the hill, workmanlike in the end but decisive. A bit surprising in the end that he didn’t win ten lengths, given that he was held on to then held on to some more – he wasn’t noticeably idling, and it could well be that this is as good as he’ll get.
152

2 Eclair De Beaufeu
midfield to rear, closer order and midfield when in close to 9th, stood off 11th, closed further going down the hill to 3 out, not fluent, travelled comfortably approaching home turn, at most nudged along and not asked to close approaching 2 out, 2 lengths down jumping, hard ridden, outpaced as Chosen Mate went on, stayed on into 2nd going to last, in close to it, stayed on last 175 yards, pulled clear of the 3rd, no chance with winner. Good run, second the best he could have done on the day.
147

3 Us And Them
pushed along to make a start, midfield, all over the place 1st, closer order and prominent when in close to 4th, ridden into 5th, ridden into and slow 8th, pushed along away from it, ridden into 9th, lost place after 10th, pushed along in rear of main group going to 3 out with most still in front, hard ridden approaching home turn, stayed on straightening but was 9th with 6 lengths to find, wandered, hard driven and stayed on approaching 2 out, went left under pressure approaching last, looked held when mistake, hard driven, went left again till jockey pulled his whip through, no extra in 3rd under a left-hand drive last 125 yards, faded and was being closed on by the 4th last strides. The jockey gets the plaudits here – hard going at the start, didn’t travel, didn’t jump, and in the end not strong at the finish.
148

4 Greaneteen
prominent to midfield, keen, mistake 3rd, moved largely comfortably and made ground after 11th, had 5 in front but within 3 lengths jumping 3 out, raced inner, pushed along home turn, switched off inner and 2 lengths down when blundered 2 out, hard driven after, faded approaching last, jumped it disputing 5th and looked held, hard driven, took 4th 150 yards out, was closing on the 3rd under pressure final strides, no impression on 1st 2. Would have been third but for the blunder at the second last.
149

5 Theinval
held up, last trio when in close to 5th, rear of main group when niggled along after 11th, taken wider going down the hill, a lot to do when mistake 3 out, niggled along, no headway and turned for home in 14th with 10 lengths to find, kept on under a hand ride going to 2 out, put under pressure, passed a few but looked held, steadied into last, hard driven run-in, kept on, stuck to task and took 5th final strides, no impression on those ahead. Hadn’t been in any sort of form, but ran well in the Grand Annual for the third time.
138

6 Ballywood
midfield, brushed 2nd, keen, mistake 8th, edged closer travelling comfortably after 11th, about 5 lengths down in 10th jumping 3 out, poised on the bit approaching home turn, shaken up and carried head to one side before mistake 2 out, hard driven approaching last, hung left, looked held when mistake, driven and kept on, stuck to task but lost 5th close home, no impression on those ahead. Errors at the last two cost him a better finish; also he didn’t look straightforward under pressure.
142

7 Lisp
midfield, niggled along after 11th, struggling to get to leaders when mistake 3 out, pushed along and outpaced approaching home turn, looked held 2 out, driven, no more approaching last, stuck to task but no impression on those ahead. This one has no change of pace and it showed, never able to get in contention.
139

8 The Bay Birch
held up, headway towards outer and midfield when not fluent 5th, niggled along after 8th. closer order from 10th, in close to 11th and pushed along away from it, headway wide going down the hill and was around 4 lengths down 3 out, further headway under a push and prominent home turn, hard driven and faded approaching 2 out, looked held when steadied into it, no more under a ride before in close to last. stuck to task run-in, no impression on those ahead. Having won earlier in the season over 2m4f, the Stable Plate would have been a better option – she was keeping on at the end.
132

9 Croco Bay
chased leader, flat-backed jump 5th, ridden into 7th, pushed along to hold place approaching 10th, in close to 11th and lost a bit of ground, still prominent under a ride when pecked on landing 3 out and also short of rom, hard ridden, faded home turn, dropped back and well held 2 out, no more when steadied into last, kept on last 150 yards, just unable to take 8th. A plucky effort but couldn’t go with younger rivals from the bend, six of the eight who finished in front of him aged seven or less.
136

10 Jan Maat
prominent to midfield, keen hold early, prominent 6th, moved comfortably and jumped soundly, chased leader approaching 3 out, loomed up on the bit approaching home turn, niggled along turning in pushed along and led 2 out, stumbled on landing, hard ridden, headed, disputed 3rd jumping last, hard driven, weakened last 175 yards, lost much ground and many places, relegated from 8th to 10th post. For me this is the one to take out of the race with next year in mind; the stumble at the second last was unlucky, but he did too much too close to the pace anyway to have held a chance of winning, and has realistic claims next year if he’s dropped in more.
134

11 Two Taffs
prominent, moved comfortably 11th, within a length when niggled along after 3 out, tracked leaders home turn, shaken up, put under pressure and couldn’t go with leaders going to 2 out, faded under pressure approaching last, well held when jumped it a bit sideways, weakened further, kept on a bit last 50 yards but well back.
135

12 Paloma Blue
midfield, keen, in close to 4th, closer order 10th, travelled largely comfortably 3 out, closed order and tracked leaders home turn, pushed along straightening, couldn’t find more going to 2 out, carried head to one side under a ride, faded approaching last, blundered, weakened run-in, no more.
143

13 Marracudja
chased leader, led 10th, moved comfortably in narrow lead when in close to 3 out and stumbled on landing, niggled along, led a length home turn, firmly pushed along, headed approaching 2 out, pecked on landing, hard driven, chased winner till faded nearing last, looked beaten when mistake, hung left and weakened last 175 yards, no more. The reinvention of this one as a front-runner worked this season, but this was the one race in which such tactics couldn’t work.
144

14 Capeland
held up, lost ground and last trio when mistake 7th, had dropped to last when mistake 9th, detached from main body of the field 11th, tailed off when mistake 3 out, allowed to complete in own time.
126

15 Winter Escape
held up last pair, niggled along 8th, more firmly pushed along after 9th, struggling when mistake 10th, detached from main body of the field 11th, left alone, tailed off when allowed to jump 3 out in his own time, pushed along after it and made no ground, chance of 14th when in close to last, no more under a push last 175 yards.
112

P Mcgroarty
prominent, raced inner, in close to 3rd, lost place and midfield 5th, niggled along away from 7th, lost further ground and rear 9th, struggling in last pair when mistake 10th, eased and pulled up straight away. Already doing badly, it was sensible of the jockey to draw stumps when he did.
0

P Gino Trail
led, ridden into 4th, niggled along after 5th, ridden into and in close to 6th, also close to 7th, ridden into 8th and 9th, headed 10th, ridden and lost place 3 out, weakened quickly approaching home turn, rear and tailing off when pulled up before 2 out.
0

P Great Field
last, not fluent 1st, mistake 2nd, made places by 7th and just about midfield, mistake 8th, took off too soon 9th, pushed along, travelled more comfortably 11th, closed a little before ridden into 3 out, bumped and squeezed between horses after, hard ridden, no impression approaching home turn and looked well held straightening, losing place when eased off and pulled up before 2 out. It’ll be some ask for his new trainer to get this one back to where he used to be (still ran off 155 here which now looks beyond him).

MARTIN PIPE CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS´ HANDICAP HURDLE
2m 4f

1 Indefatigable
was a length behind the others in the standing start and slowly away, last pair and soon niggled along, last when niggled along away from 3rd, mistake 4th and pushed along away from it, in close to 7th and pushed along, started to make places after 8th, just about midfield under a ride at the top of the hill, further ground and closing in midfield 2 out, stayed on and bumped rival (My Sister Sarah) approaching home turn, had 12 in front and 8 lengths to find straightening, hard driven some 250 yards off last, sustained effort and passed more rivals, some 5 or 6 lengths down when left 4th last, stayed on well against nearside rail, gradually closed on Pileon under pressure, 1st 2 clear, led on the post. Under the ride of the meeting from Rex Dingle, it was a great achievement by the rider just to get her into the mid-pack, let alone win the thing. Her form against Dame De Compagnie at Cheltenham in December looked a lot stronger after that one won the Coral Cup and, overpriced in the morning, she proved the point, albeit only just – one last point is that as regards the start, she was similarly positioned in the false start, so that made no difference. She’s probably done all her improving, and 2m4f to 3m Listed or Graded mares’ hurdles – which usually get small fields and tend to be weak – will provide her best chances of winning races next season.
146

2 Pileon
was bumped at the start, prominent, closer order at the top of the hill, travelled comfortably and tracked leaders approaching 2 out, niggled along, pushed along off home turn and led some 250 yards off last, soon put under pressure, stayed on, was joined by Column Of Fire approaching last, left clear, was 3 lengths clear 175 yards out, hard ridden, was joined by Indefatigable very close home, headed on the post, unlucky. Left it all on the track and was unlucky to come off second best – hard to tell what would have happened had Column Of Fire stood up (most likely a three-way photo), but he went in to this race unexposed and comes out of it the same. Will need to find improvement going forward but it’s likely he’s got that in him, and the Silver Trophy at Chepstow seems a suitable early-season target.

3 Great White Shark
was nearly side on to the tape in the standing start, went left and across several rivals when tape released, chased leader, led 5th, was joined 7th, led 8th, travelled comfortably going down the hill to 2 out, niggled along approaching home turn, was joined by Pileon turning in, hard ridden, headed, put under pressure, kept on at one pace, faded and jumped last 4th, left 3rd by the faller then briefly 2nd which he soon lost to the staying-on Indefatigable, hard driven, kept on, faded last 125 yards and was closed on by the 4th final strides. Although not pulling hard, he did give the impression throughout that he was racing with the choke out to an extent, and that told in the closing stages – it’s not a first with this one and gut feeling is to oppose going forward.

4 Happygolucky
prominent, went right and bumped rival a couple of strides off 2nd, midfield after, travelled strongly and made a little ground nearing 8th, nudged along and plenty of cover in prominent position approaching 2 out, mistake there, pushed along, disputed 4th home turn some 3 or 4 lengths down, stayed on under a firm hand ride put under pressure some 150 yards off last, held half a chance till left 2nd then hampered by the faller last, lost 2nd and looked held, kept on under pressure, was closing on the 3rd final strides but unable to get the place. Without the ill fortune at the last he’d have been 3rd and would have finished a couple of lengths closer; with form against the likes of Thyme Hill to his name in novice hurdles it’s no surprise that he proved the best of Kim Bailey’s pair and he’ll start the new season unexposed.

5 The Bosses Oscar
had ground taken at the standing start, niggled along to get going, held up, niggled along away from 3rd and approaching 5th, not fluent there and dropped to last pair, pushed along away from 6th and raced with head slightly to one side, hung right after 7th, still in last trio at the top of the hill, pushed along and made some ground but still plenty to do 2 out, hard ridden away from it, turned for home in 17th with 12 lengths to find, hard driven, stayed on, passed many rivals and got in contention for the places 125 yards off last, was hampered on the take-off side and mistake, looked held, stayed on noticeably last 100 yards and was closing on the 3rd and 4th at the post. All the plaudits for this performance go to the jockey, as this one didn’t apply himself throughout the race – one to be wary of next season.

6 Mill Green
was squashed out of position in the standing start, niggled along to get going, last when jumped left 1st and firmly pushed along for a few strides, niggled along away from 5th, mistake 6th, vigorously pushed along in last pair after 8th, made little ground from there to 2 out, hard ridden, turned for home in 19th place some 15 lengths down, put under pressure and started to pass rivals some 200 yards off last, ran over the flattened panel and slightly hampered, hard driven, stayed on noticeably last 100 yards, was closing well on those ahead final strides, nearest finish. Still hasn’t got it where his jumping is concerned, but he arguably lost his chance here at the start – he was well positioned, towards the head of the field, for the false start – so for me not a lost cause, and I’d like to see him in the 2021 Pertemps Final.
137

7 Five O’Clock
prominent, was bumped nearing 2nd, keen, stumbled bend after 4th and rider lost an iron, lost ground and midfield, mistake 7th, niggled along at the top of the hill, closed on leaders approaching 2 out, outpaced approaching home turn and had 15 in front and 10 lengths to find on straightening under a ride, hard driven and stayed on some 200 yards off last, passed a few but looked held before steadied into it and mistake, driven and was closing on those ahead last 100 yards. With no luck in running in the first mile this went wrong from an early stage and he’s worth another chance.
141

8 Ilikedwayurthinkin
prominent, was bumped 1st, short of room and was bumped a couple of strides off 2nd, midfield after, raced keenly, took off too early 6th, niggled along in midfield after 8th, raced inner, closed on leaders approaching 2 out, pushed along and turned for home disputing 7th 5 lengths down, stayed on under a ride and closing with every chance some 175 yards off last, effort flattened out approaching last, driven, kept on, faded last 100 yards and lost places close home.
135

9 Flash The Steel
held up, raced outer back straight, a bit slow 5th, headway and midfield 6th, moved comfortably after 8th but hadn’t made much ground, raced wide and started to close before mistake 2 out, niggled along after, soon more firmly pushed along, turned for home in 9th some 5 lengths down, pushed along, stayed on some 200 yards off last and closed on those ahead, put under pressure approaching last, no extra nearing it, went left and bumped rival in the air, hampered by the faller, driven and no more last 150 yards, faded. Not for the first time gave the impression that this is a maximum trip for him.
134

10 Doctor Duffy
was bumped in the standing start, midfield, short of room and blundered 2nd, towards rear after, pushed along in last trio after 8th, started to pass a few going down the hill, taken wide, midfield under a push 2 out, kept on but looked held home turn some 12 to 15 lengths off leader, hard ridden against nearside rail, no impression some 200 yards off last, slightly hampered there, kept on, passed a couple close home.
133

11 Umbrigado
held up, blundered 2nd, headway and midfield approaching 8th, niggled along at the top of the hill, passed a few going down the hill to 2 out, not fluent, pushed along away from it and carried head slightly to one side, turned for home in 11th some 8 or 9 lengths down under a ride, pushed along, stayed on approaching last, no extra nearing it, looked held when mistake and went left, driven and kept on last 175 yards, no impression close home, faded and lost 10th place late.
132

12 Front View
a bit slowly away, prominent to midfield, mistake 2nd, midfield when mistake 3rd, same sort of position when mistake 8th, started to close moving largely comfortably going down the hill to 2 out, niggled along before blundered there, firmly pushed along, kept on and turned for home in 6 lengths down with 8 in front, put under pressure, hung left but stayed on approaching last, faded nearing it and blundered, no more run-in. Barely got a hurdle right and didn’t keep a straight line at the business end of the race.
130

13 Espoir De Romay
prominent, tracked leaders when in close to 4th, moved comfortably, same sort of position when niggled along going down the hill to 2 out, pushed along after it, held place to home turn, faded under a ride some 200 yards off last, put under pressure, no impression approaching last, weakened, looked tired run-in, no more.
128

14 Thomas Macdonagh
tracked leaders, in close to 5th, ridden into 6th and 7th, closer order at the top of the hill and chased leader, niggled along approaching 2 out, hard ridden after it, chased leader to home turn but not going as well, hard driven and started to weaken some 250 yards off last, soon well held, hung left, well back last, eased final strides.
120

15 Escaria Ten
went right start, prominent to midfield, was short of room and bumped a couple of strides off 2nd, hard ridden away from it, midfield after, made ground and closer order some 250 yards off 4th, mistake there and hard ridden away from it, prominent 8th, pushed along at the top of the hill, held place to 2 out, hard ridden away from it, turned for home disputing 3rd some 3 lengths down, hard driven, weakened approaching last, well held when took off too early and went right, continued to lose ground, eased late.
117

16 Anything Will Do
midfield, slightly hampered and niggled along for a few strides bend after 4th, lost ground and in rear 5th, blundered 8th, dropped further back under a ride and in last trio 2 out, reminders soon after, little impression, detached from main body of the field under pressure some 250 yards off last, kept on a little without closing, no more when  nearly tripped crossing the flattened panel last, tailed off.
112

17 Ecco
midfield, raced inner, nearly ran out approaching 4th and steered the right side of the inside rail of the hurdle just in time, lost place and rear 7th, pushed along just after that and again approaching 8th, blundered there, weakened further and last/tailing off when mistake 2 out, no more from home turn, tailed off last.
107

18 Cliffs Of Dover
slowly away, just about midfield after 2nd, raced keenly, blundered 4th and 5th, headway and prominent to midfield approaching 8th, mistake there, in 8th some 5 lengths down at the top of the hill, looked poised going down the hill to 2 out, pushed along after it, put under pressure approaching home turn, weakened under a ride straightening, dropped away, tailed off when swerved faller last, trailed in.
102

19 Big Blue
led, a couple of lengths clear after 2nd, not so far ahead next, headed 5th, mistake 6th, ridden into and disputed lead 7th, headed 8th, chased leader till niggled along at the top of the hill, started to lose place approaching 2 out, quickly dropped through field and rear under a push, last one continuing and looked tired under pressure as became well tailed off approaching last, trailed in. Surprisingly not going off a complete outsider, in his races over two miles since coming over from Australia he wasn’t getting home, so no shock that he was done with at the second last.
81

B My Sister Sarah
prominent to midfield, shuffled back to midfield approaching 7th, lost further ground and midfield to rear approaching 8th, niggled along after, struggling to get on terms at the top of the hill, put under pressure after 2 out, was 14th some 10 lengths down on straightening, not much room and switched from middle-inner to middle-outer some 125 yards off last, kept on under pressure and closed on those ahead, was closing when brought down last. Was finishing quite well, having not gone through the race smoothly, and though she wouldn’t have won, she’d probably have finished around where Five O’Clock did, some 5 lengths adrift.
[136]

F Column Of Fire
was bumped at the start, held up, hesitant jump 1st, niggled along, midfield after 2nd, same sort of position and still niggled along approaching 8th, started a move wide at the top of the hill, closed on leaders approaching 2 out, niggled along approaching home turn, more firmly pushed along on straightening and disputed 7th with 4 or 5 lengths to find, stayed on well, put under pressure some 175 yards off last, wandered a little but sustained effort, chased Pileon approaching last, had drawn upsides when fell. After a not-too-comfortable passage through the race, this was the hard luck-story  – he’d probably have made it a virtual triple dead-heat with Indefatigable and Pileon had he stood up.
[144]

P Everybreathyoutake
went right and bumped a rival in the standing start, midfield, niggled along after 8th, pushed along in midfield at the top of the hill, made little ground going to 2 out, was bumped approaching home turn, was 12th some 9 lengths down on straightening, weakened some 200 yards off last, soon looked heavy-legged, was tailing off when eased right down and pulled up before last. Although he hadn’t been travelling for a while he had the eventual winner upsides coming off the home turn, so perhaps this performance was a bit better than the form figure he gets for it would suggest (first run since October 2019).

P Ruthless Article
midfield, short of room 2nd, lost place and rear when mistake 5th, in close to 7th, niggled along approaching 8th, pushed along and dropped back through field at the top of the hill, losing ground and looked as though was about to become tailed off when eased off and pulled up before 2 out.
